  • Roger Reid now a BYU football recruiter?

Q: As a Mormon, how did you end up at Oregon rather than BYU? — @c_drew

A: BYU blew it. They dropped the ball. (Laughs) At first they didn’t offer me a scholarship until somebody else did. They were like, “Ah, you’re a big LDS kid, you’ll just walk on.” As soon as Oregon and some other schools showed interest, they were like, “Hey, yeah, we want you too!” Then they said they needed to know right away, but I said I hadn’t figured it all out yet, and so they said they were going to give the scholarship to somebody else. Then they called me back, and visited my high school the next day, and basically told me I’d be a bad Mormon if I didn’t go to BYU. I was like, “Jeez, great, that really makes me want to come!” They just blew it. They did a terrible job of recruiting me. And Oregon didn’t. Oregon did a great job.

BYU has a great history of getting most of the LDS kids that they go after. I am not going to lose sleep over the few that get away. To me, this sounds like they missed on this kid during the recruiting process and scrambled to get him when other schools started offering him. This is the sort of risk they were willing to take with this kid. If they really wanted him badly, they would have just offered him. The kid read the situation correctly, and went to a place that wanted him more than BYU did. The players that BYU really wants get offers and BYU doesn't tell them to walk on.

I'm not worried either way, but this kid obviously harbors some very negative feelings about what happened and took the opportunity to publicly paint BYU in a bad light.

He could have said BYU wasn't interested, instead he accuses them of trying to use religion to manipulate him.

I would say his accusation was fairly accurate.

LOL. I was wondering what happened to Roger.

It seems, however, that there is a lot of truth in this concerning BYU's recruiting practices. I know of three cases BYU initially told the prospects to walk on. BYU didn't really show any real interest in the prospects until other schools started showing interest and made offers. Only one out of the three took BYU's late offer and he has been doing great there (on track to be a three year starter). I talked to one of the other two. He said pretty much the same thing as Mark Asper. He had already given his verbal to another school and started to build a good relationship with the coaches there. He said if BYU showed a little more interest up front his choice in programs may have been different.

Gotta love the double standard, Utes complain that BYU manipulates kids with religion to get them to come to BYU. But if you even entertain the idea that a certain kid didn't want to come to BYU for honor code reasons(not necessairly honor code issues, just don't want to live their college life under the HC) then Ute fans are enraged!

But the NCAA is starting to finally crack down on this (e.g. the "Riley Nelson rule").

Ute fans get mad because BYU doesn't offer a kid a scholarship?

What do you expect? Bronco needs to be home by 5:00 each night to sit down and eat dinner with his family. That doesn't give much time for recruiting. He can't be every at once!

There is that mentality out there that it is a "privilege" to go to BYU. They might be a bit leary of a kid who doesn't jump at the chance to go to BYU, scholarship or no scholarship. Could be a kid who may not totally conform to the culture.

If the culture won't expand, well perhaps they are right in being leary of kids who don't "recruit BYU". Odds go up they won't serve a mission and easily merge in with the band of brothers.

They don't see all the advantages of being part of the "borg".

Would it surprise you if Bronco said, "The likelihood that you go on a mission and remain active in Church decreases if you don't play at BYU."?

He's said it to the general public before. Do you think he doesn't take that angle in private? I'd be surprised if he didn't.
