I finally decided to read the article. I didn't really get the point. He didn't really say he didn't need NFL talent to win did he?

I really think Bronco votes for Obama. He is more into the grander picture. I am not knocking him. He is probably just more of a personality like Calicoug and Tim, both good people.

You can take another attendee's version of events as a point of comparison to what Franchuk said:

      http://www.cougarboard.com/board/mes...tml?id=8939096

"I was at the coaches clinic that Bronco spoke at and I have to agree with Andrew. Franchuk did spin Broncos comments for whatever point he is trying to make. The NFL commissioner asked college coaches to share the following stats: Only 2% of athletes that make it to the NFL will last over 3 years. 70% are either divorced, drug addiction, bankrupt, injured, etc.

It seems that Bronco is the only coach who is sharing this info, that the commissioner has asked for college coaches to share. Both Gary Andersen and Kyle made no mention of it, because they were both talking up their programs. We are a bunch of youth football coaches and Kyle made it sound like utah was going to recruit every kid we are coaching. The coach sitting next to me was from a city in Utah and is a big fan of a university not named BYU. He was really impressed by what Bronco had to say.

Bronco made no comment about his program or recruiting. His focus was only on the kids, which is why we were there. Bronco's point of sharing those stats was to encourage us coaches to make sure the kids had fun and enjoy the game of football, because most of them will not play high school, college, or pro. The kids can learn life lessons from the game of football, and we as coaches can be role models and examples for the kids. Make sure the kids have fun on the field and be good young men off it, because at some point, football will surely end. Apparently Franchuk didn't include that in his article."

      • I can see why people get upset with the NFL comments from Bronco. Although most of those being vocal about it already dislike him a great deal.

I just know this. If I had a boy (Which I don't) and he was lucky enough to to get a Schollie and he had one from every school. I would pick a school that had a Bronco type coach. I believe most parents believe the same thing as me if they had a choice.

With that said. I am a Football fan and I want to see BYU kick trash not mold young men to men. So I see the frustration of percieved gaffes.
( FYI I most likely wrote that incoherently and will be properly corrected forthwith. Thanks)

        • Judging by the commits Bronco is getting for incoming football classes, I am not surprised that he doesn't care much about the NFL.

I agree with you. I think most parents, especially LDS parents, biggest fear is their kids go on the wayward path in college. BYU is a safer choice. Most parents realize their kids aren't going to make the NFL and even if they have that kind of talent, they can still make it at BYU.

There are the few though who are extremely competitive and think their kids have a real shot. I think those parents and kids think twice, before committing to BYU. I know of a parent of an extremely talented BB player who called coach Rose and wanted assurance Bronco's 5th priority thoughts weren't coach Rose's thoughts also.

I don't want to unnecessarily debate 5th priorities or college students finding a wayward path. But most parents concern is (or should be) that their student athlete will graduate with a meaningful degree. In my view, schools can do a lot more to support their athletes in earning their degrees or at least motivate them with straight talk about the probabilities and realities of the NFL. Years ago, I recall an all-conference safety telling NFL teams that he wouldn't be entering the draft because he had accepted a scholarship for graduate school. He knew the odds.

Yeah people are going dumb over nothing. Shame on Bronco for not being a dumb jock for the kids.

But isn't school only priority #3 or 4 on the Bronco hierarchy? What was the order? What a silly list to put out. At least it got some fans all fired up, the same type that yearn for conference talks dictating the number of earrings that are appropriate or putting the kibosh on sleepovers. Anything to keep people from thinking for themselves.

And thus, we see why Utes will continue to pump gas for BYU grads.

                      • It sounds like Bronco is still busy resting on his laurels. Latest from Jay Drew:

With preseason camp starting tomorrow (Thursday), I just went through all that Mendenhall said to print reporters at media day and pulled out a few comments that I don't believe I have previously reported. Here are some of those:

On what it will take to get "over the hump" and get to the next level of success:

"Just a couple of things: I have really viewed taking over the program seven years ago. I view this time period like starting over. We are one of the top programs in the country, if you use top 25 rankings and wins and those kind of things as the mark.

And now what I am really interested in is starting from here: What else can there be? If you use top 25 as a minimum standard, then it goes to national championship. And so in trying to frame that to you -- now what? Looking at scheduling part, and making sure we can get a difficult, diverse, intriguing schedule is certainly important.

Having our coaches gain increased knowledge, and become really master teachers and true, I would say, experts in their craft. So getting in more professional visits, and getting really more detailed than we have already been. Looking at all the training methodologies that we use, in making sure that not only are we up to speed at industry standard, but beyond that in being innovative in that capacity.

We are also having outside people come in and attend our meetings and evaluate us as teachers, getting that feedback. So there is nothing that is not fair game right now. So those are examples of what I am trying to articulate. So the idea of being satisfied, or staying status quo, is the exact opposite of how I feel currently.
While I am not going to discount anything we've done -- it has been fantastic and remarkable -- but I am after more. And that's the main message to our program. And that focus for them won't be to focus on this game -- it will be completely now to focus on each single day, like it was a wet towel, and wringing out every bit of water that day. And then we will do it again the next day.

To put it bluntly, there is going to be more expected now than ever before."

Tough to find fault with any of that. DU Ute can give it a try though.
