Those are just a few examples off of one page of one thread. If you go to any BYU message board, you'll see it filled with the same kind of hand-wringing garbage. I don't know when it became the "in" thing to do to try to find every conceivable way to pick apart our coach, but it has. If you deny it happens with great frequency, you have blinders on.Originally posted by smokymountainrain View PostObsession? Welcome to the world of internet sports message boards. It's where we share our opinions about sports and on this particular board, about BYU. Some of it is positive and some negative. I feel like Bronco is auditioning to be a GA. It's a simple opinion based on my observations. I've mentioned it two, maybe three times. To call it an obsession makes no sense.
I've posted my opinion a couple times about the fact that I'm a fan of Scott Machado and his ability to play the point. Apparently, in your book, I'm obsessed with Scott Machado's ability to be a point guard.

I met with Bronco and the team last week
My daughter was selected as last week's Thursday's Hero (which happened to take place last Friday for some reason). I have to say that it was a great experience. We got a tour of the football offices, equipment room, locker room, and weight room. Lots of inspirational and motivational quotes everywhere. Bronco's office has a wall of pictures drawn by his kids. Some of the other coaches' rooms look like my office, nothing other than what is absolutely necessary. We got to sit in the team meeting room and watch highlights of the 2011 season.
We then got to go down onto the field during practice. While on the field, several players approached us and talked with my daughter for a little bit. Them seemed to know who we were and were exited to see us. I found out later that the team had watched a video about my daughter that consisted of pictures we had sent in with a brief description of her written by us and narrated by Greg Wrubel. As a result, the players knew who we were and were already knew a little bit about us.
After practice, the team ran over to us and gathered around my tiny little girl. Juice Quezada and Michael Alisa presented her with some BYU gear. We got to sign the flag they carry on the field and were given a flag signed by many members of the team and coaches. I suspect that they were all invited to sign it, but many players (Kyle van Noy, for example) were not there that day.
After the team went back to the locker room and while the media waited to interview Mendenhall, Bronco spent about 10-15 minutes talking to us alone. He seemed interested in knowing about my daughter and our family. He explained that as Thursday's Heroes, we were, in a sense, part of the BYU football family and he welcomed continued contact and updates from us and told us that, among other things, we were welcome to come to practice again. All the while Bronco was talking to us, coach Dupaix grabbed our camera and started taking pictures of us talking with him.
Overall, I was very impressed with how genuinly interested, welcoming, and happy so many of the players and coaches seemed to be to have us there. It was fun to see a bunch of big, tough guys interacting with my little, special needs daughter. it's a side of them I don't think a lot of people see. Some of the players that were especially interested and welcoming to us, or who went out of their way to talk with us a little more were Jason Munns, JD falslev, Michael Alisa, Romny Fuga, Marcus Matthews and Brandon Ogletree. I also was able to talk to a defensive starter for a few minutes who said he thinks that the defensive is going to be really good this year. When asked why, he said that he feels that the defense is strong at every postion and has no weaknesses.
Overall, with so few football posts today I wanted to provide a little football talk. I was tempted the whole time I was there to innocently ask several of the players or coaches, "Hey, where's this Jake Heaps kid I used to hear so much about?", but I was able to restrain myself. I have always been a Bronco supporter, but I'm firmly in the Bronco camp now, although I admit I've had a different experience than many others.
This program is one of the reason's I'm a fan of BYU football and BYU fan in general. This is just my feeling and I understand that others don't feel this way, but if BYU isn't different from other schools in some way, or doesn't stand for something different (not necessarily better) than other schools, then its just like any other school. And I don't want to be a fan of a football program that is just like all the others. Just my feeling.
Just wanted to share a great experience with others.

I don't mean to "obsess", but I'm legitimately confused about Bronco not seeing value in spring football. If you were a coach, wouldn't you be anxious to see what you've got with any newcomers, start implementing position or scheme changes, solidify recruiting plans, and just continue the process of of instilling fundamentals to your guys?
I don't think Bronco's words on this topic are only due to candor. I think he's way out of the mainstream on this one.

I have watched this debate unfold. In the name of full disclosure I think that BYU and The U of U have an ongoing competition for the biggest percentage of pussies in the fanbase of all D1 FBS programs. However, the other fanbases I have any interaction are in competition for the lowest pussy percentages so I might be jaded. I also fully admit that there is a bit of a Sarah Palin affect on me of Bronco due to the fact that he and I probably share a similar opinion of BYU fans. I recognize that it is not good for him to alienate the fans, even if they are almost ubiquitously string pulling pussies, but if I were in his shoes the temptation might be too much for me to not succumb to. So saying all that here goes: I don't believe Bronco is opposed to Spring Practice. In fact I think he likes it a lot. I think Bronco does not like Spring Games. If he had his way the Spring Game would not happen because he feels he can get more from an additional practice rather than a game that does little more than massage the inner thigh of the fanbase. However, since Bronco tries so hard to offend, manipulate and send into temper tantrums a fanbase disproportionately represented with pussies like Hsaru the fact that he dislikes spring games has been changed into an argument that he does not like practice. So in essence spring practice good, spring games bad and Hsaru has a bigger cooch than the beloved Marylin Chambers at her stretchiest out moments!Originally posted by woot View PostI don't mean to "obsess", but I'm legitimately confused about Bronco not seeing value in spring football. I'm choosing to mostly ignore your fatuity here and instead overwhelm you with so much data that you'll maybe, just maybe, realize that you have reams to read on this subject before you can contribute meaningfully to any conversation on this topic.

I suffer from a Sarah Palin affect and I think the fact that I share Bronco's opinion of the BYU fanbase causes me to likely defend him, perhaps more than he deserves. When it comes to the BYU fanbase, I think Bronco is carrying more grudges from 2003 and 2004 than he is from 2005 to present.Originally posted by Goatnapper'96 View PostI suffer from a Sarah Palin affect and I think the fact that I share Bronco's opinion of the BYU fanbase causes me to likely defend him, perhaps more than he deserves. LOL, I have a poor opinion of the fan base, but it is probably a different base than you and Bronco think of.Originally posted by Goatnapper'96 View PostI suffer from a Sarah Palin affect and I think the fact that I share Bronco's opinion of the BYU fanbase causes me to likely defend him, perhaps more than he deserves. Just to offer an opposing viewpoint...Originally posted by Goatnapper'96 View Post...I think Bronco does not like Spring Games. If Bronco doesn't value a spring game (or scrimmage) then I think he is doing something wrong.
I think that the players get tired of just practicing. Giving them a scrimmage gives them something to look forward to at the end of spring camp. And the reality is that he holds scrimmages during spring camp already - so why is it such a huge deal to open one of them to the public? Which is essentially what he has done - BYU doesn't do a game. They do a practice with team scrimmage sessions.
But I would think that one of the things a team could learn from a game setting (not just peewee-type scrimmage with coaches and sub players actually standing on the field) would be pacing, substitutions, getting plays in and out, etc. During game settings is when you work on reducing penalties. That seems like it could be a good thing.
I do like that he typically has allowed for some interaction between players and kids - teaching drills, etc. I'm trying to figure out if he likes that kind of stuff or not. I mean, he says he loves doing firesides and Thursday's heroes - which makes me think he likes engaging the fans to a degree. But then at other times he seems to try to disengage them and says they are dumb and should go away. Very love/hate borderline personality, if you ask me.
I'm deciding that Bronco is taking the "just win, baby" approach to winning fan approval. He doesn't care about doing anything else to benefit the fans or sell tickets. He just figures if they win the fans will buy tickets. I don't think he follows that getting folks excited in the spring could lead to selling out season tickets in the summer.
