Topic of the day on CB seems to be about no Spring game.

Of course there are those upset there is no game and of course those who are upset at those who are upset. Sometimes I really want to break my commitment. If one loves to mud wrestle, there are some great opportunities over there.

My feeling has been of late, I don't care. I would never give up a golf opportunity to go see a Spring game. There was a time when it would have bugged me not to have one, but not anymore.

If it doesn't hurt the team to not have one, then it really is a non issue for me.

Does BYU have any kind of Spring Ball tradition? I realize every program is different but I'm kind of surprised that BYU is not having a Spring Game. I can't help but contrast this to Nebraska - a program that I'm more familar with. The Red/White Spring Game is a big deal in Lincoln. Attendance was similar to a BYU home game (66K+). Team selection changes from year to year but last year team captains helped draft the rosters. Due to special team shortages, the Red captain had to switch jerseys and wear a White one to be the holder for a potential game winning FG. He purposely audibled and called a fake FG which failed when he threw incomplete into the endzone and his Red team stayed tied. The head coach didn't like it and ordered the White team back on the field for another FG attempt.

When I was in high school (back in the late 80's) my friends and I would make a road trip from Colorado to Provo for the spring game every year. The admission was free. We'd buy a box lunch that was mostly inedible and sit in the west stands where the blue-hairs sat.

As a student (early 90's), I never made it to a spring game. I think they had them, but without the excitement of the road trip with my buddies, it wasn't a big draw. I can't remember when they stopped.

I remember it used to be. When something big was thought to be coming the following year, you could get a really good sized crowd. I would miss golf for it.

I don't know when it started dieing out. I could say with Bronco and then have someone show me it really started with Crowton.

I used to come every year with my family. They always had a fireside before the game. It was a lot of fun. I was able to meet a lot of the current as well as former players. And yes those box lunches were barely edible.

I'm not worried. Bronco has proven that he can handle a QB controversy with aplomb. Look for each backup to come in for one series over the course of an entire game. Good way to get a feel for each individual.

Regarding injury frequency...

The go-to guy at BYU spring practice is now head athletic trainer Kevin Morris, who has the skinny on the injury situation.
"Like I said at beginning of year: the NCAA shows twice as many injuries in spring ball than during fall football season. So, I don't know why. Is it the intensity? Is it because we don't have a game to play? We are trying to find the facts," Morris said after Tuesday's practice when he was asked why there are so many injuries in spring ball.

My theory is that spring football happens too soon after the football season and players' bodies have not bounced back enough to take on the rigors of practice again. BYU would be best served by pushing back practice another month.

My theory is that a statistician hasn't properly vetted the NCAA findings and a more full analysis would indicate something completely different. If only I could find someone who knew stats ...

I'm not sure how conditioning will prevent broken limbs, ligament tears and shoulder separations, which seems to be the biggest problem afflicting the team.

This should be good news for those who complain about our fat linemen. From Doman:

“One of the biggest weaknesses we’ve had, particularly on the offensive line, has been their fitness level. They’re big and they’re strong, but they’ve been carrying too much weight. I don’t mind saying that. Their fitness level hasn’t been where I would like to see it as offensive coordinator. There’s a concerted effort to help the fitness level of those guys while they’re gaining strength. They’re older. We should be really strong. They’ve got more time to be in the weight room and their bodies are more mature. But I also want them to be lean, with lean muscle mass and be fit. We’re getting close to that … Hopefully we can build that fitness in and we’ll see less injury in years to come.”
