This is what I come back to. From the beginning I have thought he was weird, to the point I almost can't stand his personality as a person, but it seems to work for him. I don't know when he's trolling the fan base, when he's kissing up to the BOT, or when he's serious, but I guess I don't really care. I don't like it. But it works for him, so I'll try not to let it bother me. He just needs a QB and an OC.Originally posted by Art Vandelay View PostOne of the interesting things about Bronco, is how loyal - and dare I say respected?- he is by his current and former players. Much like every coach, he has detractors, but that seems primarily related to those feeling they should be playing, but aren't. I can't recall any former defensive players, who have ever spoken ill of the Lords University's anointed. Whatever his quirks are, he seems to get his players to buy in.

I think he builds a very loyal following. His nature does that. However, the consistent feeling of "it could have been better" has me backtracking. He is a much better coach than most of his critics want to admit, I believe but I am losing faith he is as good as I once thought he was.Originally posted by Art Vandelay View PostOne of the interesting things about Bronco, is how loyal - and dare I say respected?- he is by his current and former players. Edit: On the loyalty I think what I mean is that strong cult of personalities always develop really loyal followers. He makes his players and coaches as part of his "us agin' the world" mentality. It rallies folks and when things go south he can recover brilliantly by imbuing his strong personality and personal toughness on his players. The bigger question is does it being all about him limit where he is taking the BYU program?Last edited by Goatnapper'96; 10-29-2012, 08:56 AM.Do Your Damnedest In An Ostentatious Manner All The Time!

I'm choosing to mostly ignore your fatuity here and instead overwhelm you with so much data that you'll maybe, just maybe, realize that you have reams to read on this subject before you can contribute meaningfully to any conversation on this topic.

His public persona maybe. I haven't met him myself, but I've never talked to anyone that has met him that hasn't liked him.Originally posted by jay santos View PostThis is what I come back to. I love my dentist, I recommend him to others and see him faithfully every 6 months. I do think it is odd that cleanings always have to be done in the nude though. I never say anything about it because my teeth are so brilliant when I leave and I haven't had a cavity since I started going to him.Originally posted by Art Vandelay View PostOne of the interesting things about Bronco, is how loyal - and dare I say respected?- he is by his current and former players. Spent a lot of time talking with a buddy, who is a close friend of a current player, about this over the weekend. Bronco, as far as I can tell, is completely different behind the curtain than he is in public.Originally posted by kccougar View PostHis public persona maybe. This conversation spawned from me making the comment after Riley's latest pick-6 Saturday that I think our coaches deserve blame for not coaching that shit out of him. But my buddy pointed out he firmly believes — and I think he's right — that all the coaches are completely different behind closed doors than they are in public. While they defend Riley in public, I think they probably dress him consistently in private — and the fucker doesn't listen.
In particular, the current player who's friends with my buddy has frequently described Bronco as "such a hard ass" that really coaches 'em up and demands perfection. I think Bronco is fiercely loyal. I think he's actually really genuine. To those who know him, he's damn likable.
The problem is that when the lights come on and he gives interviews or speaks publicly, he trots out the most inauthentic personality in the world. It's arrogant. It's insular. It's a lot of things that make everyone cringe. I like the fact that he consistently protects his players and never criticizes them in public, for example, but I wish he would do something — anything — to project authenticity towards our fans instead of all the other junk.

This would explain his bromance with Riley Nelson.Originally posted by Indy Coug View Post
I would like to believe this, but if they really demand that kind of performance, they would have benched Riley Nelson by now (at least for a little bit) for his refusal to take care of the football. Or maybe it's just like a typical case of bad parenting with a lot of bluster and threatening but no real consequences.Originally posted by DillyBar View PostThis conversation spawned from me making the comment after Riley's latest pick-6 Saturday that I think our coaches deserve blame for not coaching that shit out of him. I had a friend who was a college AD. He told all his coaches they needed to do 3 things if they wanted to keep their job.
1) Win
2) Keep the players happy
3) Keep the fanbase happy
If they could do at least 2/3 they would be pretty secure, but if they were 1/3 or 0fer, then they would likely be looking for work.
I think Bronco truly cares about the kids he coaches, both on and off the field. They know that and respect him. Based upon my conversations with someone who has known him since Snow college, I think he really, really cares about winning. I don't think he cares for Greg Wrubell, Cecil Samuleson, or 90% of the fans.
I couldn't care less, if likes the fans or not as long as he is winning. Heck, he is downright cuddly compared to Krzyzewski, Knight, Saban, and numerous other "great" coaches. The biggest difference isn't winning the games fans think he should be. Most of us (myself included) forget how Dave Rose was perceived before James Taft, went from prison to Provo. He was thought of a great guy, and a good coach, who consistently underachieved in both the MWC and NCAA tournaments.
I know 3 different families who've had, or currently have, players on the team. All 3 of them, can't stop gushing about how good Bronco was/is to their boys (only 1 of which was a starter). I'm not sure what that means, but I don't think it is insignificant.
I'm fine with BM starting every press conference by proclaiming how much he hates Art Vandelay, and how stupid I am. He could even were an XXL, sloppy looking polo, with FU AV on it, as long as he starts beating Utah, and teams of similar ilk.

Yes, that would be a reasonable position to take if he was actually pulling in some quality wins on a regular basis. But he isn't.Originally posted by Art Vandelay View PostSorry, it is the only sample size I have.
I probably rambled too much, but my point is, I don't care much what he does or doesn't say, I only care if he wins.
I can't help myself. I care about:
winning
recruiting
moving the program in a positive direction
picking good assistants
clock management
kicking game
getting the team prepped for big games
game-time adjustments
off-season conditioning
etc.
If he were taking care of all of those things, I really wouldn't care how big a dork he is every time he gets a microphone. And he could insult me and the other fans all he wants. But he needs to earn the right to do that. He hasn't."There is no creature more arrogant than a self-righteous libertarian on the web, am I right? Those folks are just intolerable."

If I coached a player and he was willfully reckless like Riley is, he'd be benched. Will donate kidney for B12 membership.

I want the program to be recognized and respected because we win and beat other notable teams.
That hasn't been the case in a while.
I couldn't care less if they're all good boys who play for the team. Nobody is perfect. We have all made mistakes. I couldn't care less if they have a fireside. I couldn't care less if about any of that stuff. If they do it and win, great. If they do it and lose to every notable team on our schedule like they have the last 2 years, then it just makes me think they should be focusing on winning the game. Will donate kidney for B12 membership.

Wouldn't the alternatives play a part in your decision-making?Originally posted by The_Douger View PostIf I coached a player and he was willfully reckless like Riley is, he'd be benched.
I suspect it pretty simple when it comes to Riley. Of all the QBs in the stable, Riley gives us the best chance to win ball games. That's pretty depressing, I know, but I believe it is the truth. So you gotta go with your best chance.Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!
For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.
Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."
