His legacy was not tarnished by those years of enabling. That is his legacy - at least a huge part of it.

      • Interesting. People are so complicated. I wonder if he'd have gone and died on us if he were still coaching and none of this pedophelia scandal had happned.

I wondered the same and told someone at Church this. I think this happens to lots of people once they no longer have something to live for.

JoePa goes out in style, "Fuck you all, I'm dead."

              • What a tragedy that the first sentence on CNN announcing his death also comments about Sandusky.

If he didn't want that to be his legacy, he shouldn't have enabled Sandusky's sick behavior for over 10 years

That is why it is a tragedy.

I see a lot of accusations of him enabling the behavior while he is not one that was accused of doing anything wrong legally. He told the authorities, more of the blame rests on them.

He let Sandusky hang around the Penn St program and continue in his role in a charitable foundation for children with knowledge of his pedophilia.

He knew about it in 1999 and to believe otherwise requires some huge leaps of logic. He knew Sandusky had a CPS investigation. Sandusky retired at an extremely young age for coaches at 55. This was a guy that easily could have got a head coaching gig. It is pretty clear that there was something pushing his retirement.

He let him continue to hang around the program, have access to the facilities, and even allowed him to continue to be involved with recruiting as recently as 2011.

I think you are absolutely right here. I believe he even said so in years past (and Bobby Bowden has said the same thing) when you are as old as these guys are and you retire from coaching, you essentially go home and wait to die.

As an aside, the Sally Jenkins interview with JoePa in the post and subsequent radio interviews have been really interesting.

Well, because he thought it was good sport. Because some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.
