If he didn't ask some exploratory questions, then he's just as quilty as if he knew the whole sordid detail. JoePa is in charge of Penn State's football program. It's his job to know.
JoePa also comes from a different era. My dad is 72 and he remembers a boy scout activity when he was a kid at a lake or pool or some place where women weren't allowed and for some reason or other all the boys and the adult leaders were swimming around naked (I'm fuzzy on the details). Besides the fact that nothing like this could ever happen now, my dad says there was in no way, shape or form any kind of abuse or molestation issue involved with it. Anyone that has had gym pass knows that old men seem to unfortunately be a lot more comfortable walking around a locker room naked than someone, say, 50 and under. This stuff wasn't monitored very closely decades ago. It could be that if "horsing around" was conveyed to Paterno, then he took that at face value.

With that said, if my dad had heard something like that, he would have absolutely thought something was wrong or at least looked into it. They're not completely from the same generation, but things didn't change a whole lot between the late 30s and the early 50s in that regard.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

Not to pile on, but Nebraska and Penn St. played a home and home in 02-03. I think they allowed about 700 yards rushing to Larry Johnson in '02. Before that, they played a fairly meaningful and famous game in 1983. You're on a roll today!

Edit: The famous game was in 82.

          JoePa is definitely culpable, IMO.
No! Not the shower key! Anything but that!

Not to play devil's advocate, but horsing around and locker rooms, and especially showers in locker rooms seem to go hand in hand (for better or for worse). He could dig deeper or he could say, "GA seemed upset, I'd better report this to the AD, just to cover my bases."

Maybe it was senility, but I have a hard time thinking JoePa would do the bare minimum if he had an inkling that it was as serious as it was. I place the blame completely on the GA. He saw what he saw, and it was questionable judgment to only take it to JoPa and daddy in the first place.

What motivation does JoPa have to lie or water down the incident to the AD? An ex-coach (not a current coach) raped a young boy in PSU's facilities and a GA told him about it. JoPa has kids and grandkids. Unless he's scum of the earth, I think he tells all that he knows.

Maybe he's scum of the earth (and if he did know more, then he clearly is).

Even if all JoPa knew was that sandusky was naked in the shower with a boy, that should have triggered all sorts of alarm bells.

I just can't believe that McQueary didn't tell JoPa at the VERY minimum that child molestation was taking place. No way did he just say they were with naked in the shower.

                JoPa knew.

So after seeing a ten year old sodomized, in what world would you describe that to someone as horsing around? The chances that the GA used that language seems really close to 0%. And if Paterno even commented on how distraught the GA was, do you think 'horsing around' was the jist of the conversation?

I just can't believe GA didn't do something about it when he witnessed it, but dumbass called his dad, who told him to leave the building instead of protecting a child. GA may have beat around the bush and JoPa misunderstood the issue (he handled the rest of this situation like damn fool) JoPa desn't seem to be the most lucid individual, but admittedly, nine years worth of water had crossed under the JoPa bridge.

In what world do you call your father, leave the child with the perp and then wait a day to tell--not the police--but your boss, who is no longer the boss of the perp. Let's not assume that GA would have used good judgment in reporting it to JoPa; He clearly has horrific judgment.

This has been dissected ad nauseum. Kicking it up the chain and walking away doesn't cut it for obvious reasons. I can't fathom any scenario under which the incident should not be thoroughly investigated and addressed by Joe Pa. He was an integral part of a process that failed with tragic consequences.

McQuery was wrong, but Joe Paterno is one of the most influential people in the state of Pennsylvania. It could've--and should've--stopped with him.

No, actually Paterno told the grand jury that he was told Sandusky was fondling or doing something sexual to a 10-year-old boy in the shower. Page 7, paragraph 2 of the grand jury indictment.

?? Are you living in a black and white world? People do weird things when faced with very high stress situations. It was VERY poor judgement on his part to not go to the authorities. I'm sure he is regretting how he handled it.

Of course he should have done something. But he didn't. It was high stress. People react weirdly.

Even if he was beating around the bush when he told JoPa, I would bet a ton of money that he conveyed enough to set off enough alarms that JoPa should have gone to the police.
