The problem is Penn St fans and students are using this as a rallying point around their long-time head coach.

The other problem is Penn St is undefeated and playing a big-time program for the first time in, what, 45 years?

I doubt you'll even see a noticeable minority using this game as a statement of protest.

Penn State played (and lost to) Alabama earlier this year. The Lions also won the Big-10 and played in the Rose Bowl after the 2008 season (where they got whacked by USC).

I suspect the undergraduate students don't really grasp what's going on. For the most part, they're not the brightest bulbs.

        I blame the faculty.

I should've said undefeated in conference play. I am an idiot.

            LOL.

Penn State is a fun place for an undergraduate degree (if you can afford it). A fairly large number of the student-body is comprised of kids from Jersey who couldn't get into Rutgers. Many of PSU's students have the "I'm a consumer and am paying a lot of money for this education" entitlement complex.

On the other hand, there are lots of really good students and lots of really fantastic facilities/opportunities.

Most of the kids on campus, though, don't read the newspaper (they can get the NYT, USAToday, and local daily for free) and get all of their news through facebook. I can almost guarantee that many of them don't really know what's going on.

Saturday's game will be a drunken celebration, as usual. I'm considering driving to Nevada to put some money on Nebraska, though.

The more I learn about this fiasco, the more I"m pissed off that the GA didn't act, Paterno didn't follow up, and Curley/Spanier just swept it under the rug. Yet again, I come away with the feeling that anyone not doing football is really getting in the way of what the university is trying to accomplish.

You're such a loveable idiot, though.

PSU was undefeated in conference play until the heartbreaker at Iowa in 2008. IIRC, that was early November as well.

Is there a reasonable doubt in your mind that the GA did not adequately convey to JoePa the idea that he walked in on an old man having naked, anal sex with a 10-year-old boy in the shower? That there was something ambiguous about what he might have seen? How does one explain away having naked, anal sex with a 10-year-old boy?
See, that's what benefit of the doubt means. Right now JoPa is saying that he was only told that Scumdusky was "horsing around" in the shower. I'm willing, right now, to give him the benefit of that doubt (meaning, I doubt it's true, but I'll take him for his word). GA sees what he sees, and instead of helping the poor child, runs to the phone to call daddy. A day later he and daddy approach JoPa. Perhaps in the 24-hour period between wintessing the event and speaking with JoPa, GA and dad decide, I need to water this down so my job is not at stake, so he says, I saw some horseplay in the shower and it upset me. JoPa reports up, not appreciating the gravity of what was witnessed (albeit naively). I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt b/c I have a hard time believing that had he been given a full, accurate report that he wouldn't have blown the whistle and taken it to the cops. If I didn't give him the benefit of the doubt, my analysis would not differ from DDD's in any material respect.

EDIT: It seems like you're conflating JoPa and the GA.

Here's the problem with that scenario. If someone comes to your office and reports someone is "horsing around" in the shower. Don't you immediately start asking questions? Don't you ask the GA, what do you mean by "horsing around"? I can't fathom that Paterno he wouldn't inquire what exactly took place. If he didn't ask some exploratory questions, then he's just as quilty as if he knew the whole sordid detail. JoePa is in charge of Penn State's football program. It's his job to know.

Again, I meant to say undefeated --break-- and playing a program they haven't played in 45 years.

Wow, I did not know that's what he saw. I've only read a few blurbs about what happened, and I've been under the impression that he saw a 10 yo boy and Sandusky in the showers with nobody else in the locker room and so took some time to process what he saw before reporting it to Paterno. I think I recall something about "horseplay" as well but no specifics.

If he saw what you're saying he saw I don't know how you live with yourself not calling the police immediately.

Absolutely. That story just doesn't hold water.

The other thing left unmentioned is whether anyone asked Sandusky "who was that kid, what were you doing with him and btw you will never be here again, perhaps not at all, but certainly never in the company of a pre-college age youth." There should have been some sort of careful investigation. IN my mind, even if you think it is just 'horsing around' (whatever that is) given the hour and the location, you are immediately concerned about the kid and the behavior that might be taking place elsewhere. How could anyone, even taking JoPa at his word, think this is anythign other than a gravely serious situation for that child?
                              PLesa excuse the tpyos.

According to the indictment, a parent reported the incident to university police in 1998, but charges were never filed. And after the GA walked in on him in 2002, administration took away his shower key and the incident was reported to his charity.

                                JoePa is definitely culpable, IMO.
