I think that article PW has posted says it all.. The Big Ten conference schools (Most of them) are lacking the desire to spend Big money on coaches. They are relying heavily on what the Big Ten used to be (Prestige), that is no longer there. The schools need to commit to putting up big money for coaches. We want top coaches here..

Big money doesn't necessary mean a top coach or the right coach. I don't think Michigan or Nebraska will be too frugal. Nebraska once thought it was getting a "top coach" from the NFL in Bill Callahan. He wasn't a good fit at Nebraska. But that model worked well for the Buckeyes so far with Urban Meyer. But it's often difficult to find the right HC. If I remember correctly, Ohio St. struggled in between Woody Hayes and Jim Tressel. Nebraska has had similar struggles post Tom Osborne. Michigan is in similar territory post Lloyd Carr.

Earl Bruce and John Cooper were not coaches I would consider we struggled with. Bruce was a Woody type coach who hired a little unknown GA name Urban Meyer. I guess you can say, we can thank him for Urban. They have a close relationship to this day. Cooper had top ranked teams. His only fault was getting only 2 wins against UM his entire tenure. In fact, that is what got him fired..

We want top coaches, we gotta pay top money. Pure and simple.. The other schools have not, and I thought that article showed that fairly well. None of the guys at the other schools like Purdue, Illini, NW, etc. show a desire to get the best coach.. We need to raise the bar across the board of the conference.

Hah no way. I've heard Sean Payton and Nick Saban, but that doesn't mean those guys are plausible. There are dozens of people hearing mutually exclusive things from their sources, and I don't think anybody knows enough to say who has better sources. NFL guys can't believe Harbaugh would ever leave for the NFL, but course that's true, but those who actually know Harbaugh swear he's very interested. I wonder if the AD isn't releasing misinformation intentionally to figure out who is leaking to whom or to keep people off the proper trail.

I'd still guess Harbaugh if I had to pick one, but the odds do seem longer the last 24 hours so at this point I'd probably take the field. Harbaugh obviously isn't going to say anything, and I get annoyed when everybody reads a candidate's words prima facie as if they have any motivation to reveal their intentions.

I'll be mad at the hiring of almost all of the possible candidates, so I'm really hoping they've got a line on somebody (Harbaugh, Miles, Mullen, or one of the secret long shots) and are just waiting out the end of his season. I don't think Schiano and the like are any better than Hoke, and at least Hoke was a really good guy which isn't said of Schiano.

I've been somewhat surprised that we haven't seen more dominoes fall in coaching circles with how many open jobs there are.

Yeah that didn't happen. Apparently a bunch of people who have no idea how a coaching search works nevertheless have jobs reporting on coaching searches.

Michigan has tasked a search firm with assembling a pool of candidates, all of whom are at least open to the job. The interim AD made it very clear that they wanted a very wide pool, so the search firm has been gauging the interest of a whole bunch of different coaches. Cutcliffe is a good coach so it makes sense they'd want to gauge his interest and potentially add him to the growing pool of candidates. There are conflicting reports about whether that even happened, but if it did, Cutcliffe seems to have said no thanks. He's an old guy with a nice job, so it makes sense he wouldn't be interested, but even if he'd love to be the next Michigan HC, he surely recognizes how far down the list he'd be, so why bother getting involved?

The Michigan fan base freaked out a little over it, but only because some sports reporters decided that saying "no thanks" to Michigan means he had actually been offered, and there's just no way that's true.

Michigan is still focused on Harbaugh, so unless he gets fired or gives Michigan a hard "no" before the end of the season, there will be no hire until at least Dec 28. Beyond that, it's unknown which of the many other candidates would constitute plan B. A lot of the most desirable ones have also reportedly said no, but that doesn't necessarily mean much, as demonstrated by most every coach who switches jobs a couple weeks after saying no.
