  • What is so critical about the first season in the PAC above any other season the Utes are not going to get kicked out of the conference. All teams have rough patches.

A savvy recruiter will spin this positively. You go into the recruits living room and tell the kid and his parents that you need help right away. Best player plays regardless of class and there are needs at many positions.

I'm a little puzzled by the shreeve kid not playing, only because Whit seems inclined to play young talent if they are good enough. Isn't Dres what's his face a frosh? And he gets significant playing time. Is Shreeve good enough to play?

I think it's very critical recruiting wise if your in a bowl game or not in the 1st year. If Utah makes a dent and has something to keep there head high about, and salvage to a decent season, and that will be huge from a recruiting and confidence standpoint for the whole coaching staff and team. I really want to say that the Utes can win 3 of their next 5 since all 5 are the worst teams in the league, but I can't pick out any team that we can easily beat right now except maybe Colorado.

The following was in the print edition of the D-News, I have not been able to find it online:

"We're this far into it and we're going to redshirt him. It's just going to be a situation where we're going to go with the guys we've got with five games left," Utah coach Kyle Whittingham said while noting that the competition between Shreve and Robles was "very, very close" this week for the backup spot. Robles, in fact, may have held a slight edge.

"That being the case we just decided why bring a guy that we're not going to insert in the game," Whittingham explained.
Col. Klink: "Staff officers are so clever."
Gen. Burkhalter: "Klink, I am a staff officer."
Col. Klink: "I didn't mean you sir, you're not clever."

HAS to be the current strategy at Miami. Seems to be working (I mean that seriously. They are getting the recruits. Not the wins. But the recruits, yes.)

The only concern about this first season is that the BCS honks will point to Utah's struggles and condescendingly say "we told you so".

Not really. Colorado also has zero conference wins and they came from a BCS conference.

Im not saying that Utah shouldn't be concerned, just saying that there isn't anything special about the first season over any other season. If anything, you could argue that this is the season to tank. Everyone will write it off as the adjustment period.

The problem seems to be that Utah doesn't have anything substantial in the pipeline, either, so not sure what is going to change next season at the QB position.

I understand what you're saying. I'm just pointing out what the BCS honks will say in order to justify denying access to the fake championship of about half the teams in Division I football. Utah struggling somehow proves to them that they've done it right because the little guys can't compete.

Probably stick it out with injury prone Wynn again unless we can find some JC gem or recruit a freshman that will make an immediate impact.
