  • Heaps would be stupid to go to WSU. Halliday performed well and you have to think he's got that thing locked down in spite of the coaching change. Jake needs the right situation and that's not it.

Leach isn't afraid of the two QB system. Also his QBs haven't faired well at the next level. Cal is his best bet.

Hard to say. I mean the kid's only started two games, only one of which he was any good in. But to a certain extent Heaps is going to face competition wherever he goes. If he ends up at Cal there'll be more top-to-bottom QB talent than at Wazzu.

Though I've been expecting more of a Gilbert-to-SMU type scenario where he can walk right in the door. His list of potential schools has always struck me as a bit odd.
So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

        • Some guy named Dave Softy Mahler is tweeting that Heaps is visiting Kansas:

Was told Jake Heaps will take an official visit to Kansas this weekend. Charlie Weis effect.
          Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

              Yep, no expectations to win.
"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

Crist may be going there as well.

Transfers come with some baggage. There is already an acknowledgement that there was some sort of failure at the first school. When you're being recruited out of high school, maybe you go for the best school you can get a schollie from. When you're transferring, I think you have lower ambitions. You go for the easiest option.

Also the timescale is tight. Out of high school, you will have a shot to win the starting job anytime over the next four years (frosh, RS frosh, RS soph, RS jun). With Jake, he's got exactly one year 2013 to win the starting job and still be able to finish with a relatively successful college career.

I think you look at a school with 1) a starting senior QB next year 2) shitty competition on the current roster 3) a team that passes a lot. And that's pretty much it. If it's San Jose State, that's what you choose. Don't get caught up in going to a high profile school. Plenty of NFL QB's played at no name schools.

Other than the "shitty" competition on the current roster (but who knows), you've pretty much described BYU.

I think shitty competition also applies.

                      • I agree with Jay for the most part.

Jake needs to avoid schools where there's an incumbent underclassman. He needs to choose a school where he's forecast to be the guy when he's eligible. If he chooses a situation like WSU then I think it makes his decision to transfer even more dumb.

                        • I'm going to go ahead and add this tidbit.

I've spent a lot of time thinking about Jake's situation and his transfer possibilities. The more I think about it the more I think whoever is pulling his strings needs to be given an atomic wedgie followed by a swift kick to the nads. Had Jake swallowed a bit of pride, taken his redshirt, worked his butt off in practice/off season, and let Doman continue to mature (which I feel he has throughout the season), Jake would have been sitting pretty in a year as the undisputed king of Provo.

Now Jake has a very uncertain future that could easily lead to him riding pine until the end of his college career. The ease in which this transfer thing could backfire boggles my mind.

I have to agree with you. Intially I was all for Jake transferring. After seeing what is out there, his best shot would have been to eat humble pie, kiss the coaches butts, work his tail off and get his shot here. At least here there is a group who are routing for him to succeed. Somewhere else there is a group routing for him or any of the QB's in there system to succeed.

Based on the post from CB about Jake's dad and the rumors about both Heaps' parents meddling concerning the playcalling and offensive coaching staff last year, it's hard to think there's anything more to the Doman/Heaps relationship thing than Heaps' parents blaming Doman for Heaps poor play and his benching, and subsequently controlling and manipulating Jake into transferring.

                              • I'm sure it won't happen, but is it possible for Jake to look around and choose to stay at BYU.

                                Does a release prevent that?
