Then you are cousins with Trevor's sister whose name escapes me right now. She was roomates with a girl I knew.

But he was tough on Heaps, noting that the offense just looked better under Riley. Hard to disagree.
    Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

I would hope that if Trevor is his cousin, Trevor's sister would also be his cousin.

Unless, of course, she is Trevor's stepsister, as he would then be able to claim that she's not really his cousin because there would be no blood relation.

Oh man, if Irish fans take that article at face value they are in for a rude awakening.

            This sounds accurate.

In addition to a strong and accurate arm, Heaps is mobile and athletic. He is able to move around in the pocket and avoid the rush, and if needed, can run.

I loved how everyone locally here began to pile on the praise for Jake when he "avoided" the sack against Whocares Diddly Tech, stepped forward, and threw a TD to Falslev. All I said was it's about time. It showed me that he nearly went fetal position only to discover he was still standing and did the right thing for once. Progression, but not the monumental leap forwar everyone declared it to be.

Mobility and toughness in the pocket? Please.

I don't think there's really a school named Whocares Diddly Tech.

I don't think that was a progression. We already saw him manage the pocket much better last year, avoid pressure, step up under pressure, etc. To me it was more a reversion back to the familiarity and comfortability of what we were doing last year rather than any jump forward.

There are some really cool advanced metrics like PAN and WPA, but because BYU's internet presence is limited to fan forums and ignorant journos, I've never seen it applied to BYU players. Perhaps there's a national source that calculates those things for everybody?
I prefer the good 'ole eye ball test over ESPN's statistics that nobody understands.

It's a market, and your value is in providing unique information. The first problem is that it doesn't seem like any of the BYU writers do this very often. There's rarely anything in their articles that one couldn't have gotten from the press conferences they use as their sources.

That having been said, when they actually try to provide something deeper, they almost always go the direction of personnel issues, not the direction of what's actually happening on the field. Why is there not a single journalist or blogger who seems at all concerned with writing about blocking schemes, the on-field chess match, which players are performing well and why (i.e. not what's in the box score), how coaches are using their players to maximize their effectiveness, what the coordinators are trying to do, etc.?

Perhaps BYU fans don't miss all that because they don't realize how little they understand about what's going on? Granted, a lot of this is my own frustration with how much more fun it is to watch Michigan play lately, since I know exactly what's going on, because there's probably 20 hours worth of in-depth football nuts and bolts written every week during the season about exactly what's happening on the field, whereas I've seen only a tiny bit of that about BYU over in the years, and in each case it was because a coach actually talked about schematics in an interview, not because a journalist understood a single thing about what was going on. Shouldn't sports journalists be expected to know at least a little bit more than the average fan about the sports they cover?

                      Okay, end of rant.
I totally agree with this sentiment. That's part of the reason I enjoyed Deep Shades of Blue when Quin Gooch was writing the articles. I enjoyed the more technical breakdowns instead of all the soap opera drama crap. A lot of it is because most of the media in Utah doesn't have any more sports background than your average blogger so everything keeps getting rehashed. If there isn't something to rehash then they (PK) try to start a controversy. I'm a little bit surprised that Jan and Gunther don't break things down more this way. I think they sometimes get caught in the trap of the Utah media and don't focus enough on X's and O's.

                      • Well, there are second-hand reports that Heaps is headed to both Cal and Wazzu. Good rumor there.

I hope he goes to play for Leach -- I would love to see what he can do in his system. If he doesn't succeed there then he really just doesn't have it.

So would I. Halliday is the big question mark there, but apparently some aren't convinced he's the starter and according to the rumor Leach has told Heaps he has a legit shot to start coming off his redshirt (not sure what else he'd tell him).

You're wrong. BYU played them 4 times this year.

And we have them scheduled for November over the next 4-5 years.
