I watched the last minute of the game, and they won. Maybe I should stop watching the games. Perhaps it's my fault. My friends still blame the 1996 World Series collapse on me attending the home games.

That should be a head coach call IMO.Originally posted by Surfah View PostI pretty much agree with your post. I believe last night was his 13th start.
Game management at the end of the first half makes me want to swallow a bullet. Against Texas we're within Sorenson's range, but instead we try to get one more play. Last week we run two dangerous outs and are forced to punt giving Utah the ball back when 3 straight runs or kneels would have sent us into OT. And last night we do the same thing as you mention. I have no clue what the hell Doman is thinking in these situations.Awesomeness now has a name. Let me introduce myself.

Was the left guard the one who got blown up on the 3rd and 1 early on? Somebody on the line got absolutely submarined on that play.Originally posted by cougjunkie View PostTwo other quick thoughts, byus left guard whether it was thorson or #57 whose name escapes me were both terrible on pass protection and run blocking.
Also Travis Tuiloma is a bad ass dislocated elbow they pop it back in throw a sleeve on him and he is back in there.
Also, was it just me, or didn't Godfrey have a discloted elbow too? Maybe it was only hyperextended, but it made me wince when I saw it. Gutsy for him to come back.Awesomeness now has a name. Let me introduce myself.

This. Once again I do not understand the chorus of enthusiastic cheers emanating from BYU fans whenever he comes in. When UCF saw him in at Q they called timeout to discuss, and my guess is Doman knew they would be completely prepared for the run, so he tried to throw them off a bit by allowing Nelson to make that terrible pass. Put Hypes in to run that same play and they probably convert, being he has shown that he can at least make the short pass. Let's develop unpredictability by continuing to improve the run game, no?Originally posted by TripletDaddy View Post
There were some real bonehead calls....Nelson comes in to make a lousy pass (wtf).
I think Doman needs to abandon any resemblance of that nightmare qb system. Let go of the mildcat. Sure, Riley has made some 3rd down conversions, but have any of them not been after we had to burn a timeout to get the right personnel in there? He is a great athlete and a competitor and can contribute other ways. His option run on the fake punt was a thing of beauty. This is the kind of thing we need him for. Give him a bigger role on special teams and maybe even throw him in at the slot every once in a while. I won't say he should be out of the qb rotation completely, as I really don't know much about Lark or Munns. But please, let's get one qb in there and stick with him until he gets hurt. What I win, I keep. What you win, I keep.

Oh Doman deserves a lot of the blame for Heaps IMO. But a lot of Heaps issues have been accuracy related that I'm not sure you're fixing mid game wherever your QB coach is.Originally posted by Katy Lied View PostYou guys criticizing Heaps are out to lunch. It is 95% Doman's fault. Heaps is a young QB who needs intensive coaching and mentoring and teaching. Right now he's getting squat during the game. Doman tells him "good luck" during warmups and doesn't get back to him until the press conference.
Doman was terribly arrogant for thinking he could coach the QBs and call the offense at the same time when he's never done any OC work before. Right now the offense is taking up all of his time, and the QBs are getting shit for mentoring on the field. After all of Heaps' turnovers, he gets nothing from the coaching staff. No coaching, no advice, no suggestions, no motivation.
Compare that to Utah. As much as I think Chow has jumped the shark, he's known for mentoring and coaching QBs. Plus, they've got Brian Johnson who does nothing but watch the QBs and focus on them. This year, they've managed to turn a mediocre QB with a duck arm into a decent general who's increasingly comfortable in the pocket. What does Heaps have? Nothing during the game, and it's worse now that Doman isnt even on the field.
It's not just Heaps, look at how poorly Riley Nelson is performing as well, on the few plays he's been in the game. The only down conversion he got is on the option, something he's been doing in his sleep his whole life.
Doman needs an assistant coach to take over the QBs right now. Heaps is paying the price for Doman's arrogance.

Actually, Heaps made some good short throws last night, but I couldn't resist.Last edited by Green Monstah; 09-24-2011, 01:27 PM.Jesus wants me for a sunbeam.

See, I actually didn't think that it was that poor of a throw. It looked like it was going to Hoffman but #85 (Cutler?) jumped thinking it was going to him, tipped it up and allowed UCF to make the pic. Maybe it was a bad throw, but I think it was morethe WR fault than Heaps.Originally posted by TripletDaddy View PostI thought in general Doman called a better game than the first 3. Good to see Marcus Mathews so significantly involved in the first half, we continued to pound the ball and it seemed like that was the most we have seen from Juice and North/South Kariya this entire season....not sure if it is because Doman is featuring them more or because Juice feels better, but in any event, we were mixing it up a bit more than usual.
There were some real bonehead calls....Nelson comes in to make a lousy pass (wtf).
However, if Hypes executes, BYU wins this by at least 2 more TDs. His throw that was picked in the first half was a bad throw.
The wheel route to JJ was open. Same thing on the play action to McKay. Just put a little too much on them. Maybe I'm off but if Apo is in the game, I think the post that went to McKay is a completion for six. Heaps and Apo seem to have their timing worked out.And he had JJ open into the EZ but threw too hard. That happened again a little later in the game...right play, open receiver to lead into the EZ, throw is way too long.
Could be, but I hope we see some this week, or at least work on it. Utah State is gonna bring the heat against Hypes. Either look to keep more in and protect and run less out on routes (which should be fine since Heaps is staring down receivers anyways) or add a few screens into the game plan and soften the blitz. Same thing with the running game. Going to be important to establish the run to keep the defense honest and have play action be effective.Sizzle asked whether we have screen plays in our playbook. I was wondering the same thing but part me wonders if there isn't a reason we aren't seeing many yet. Heaps does seem to lack the soft touch...or at least he has it but lost it for the time being. Does every throw he makes have to be a rocket?

I saw the same thing on the pick that you did. I didn't think it was that bad of a choice - perhaps the throw was off.Originally posted by Sizzle View PostSee, I actually didn't think that it was that poor of a throw. Placeholder for who? Don't tell me Andy Reid. Why would Andy want to "retire" from the NFL to BYU, especially after Bronco's played Mission President the last few years? Admin is going to expect Andy to perpetuate that role and I highly doubt that's in Andy's nature. I hate to be judgmental, but by the way his kids turned out, I wouldn't expect him to do as well in the fatherly figure role that Bronco has created.Originally posted by Viking View PostIn reaction to Bronco's hiring, a certain legend said: "Placeholder".
I came to like Bronco and so did this fellow. But Bronco is going to lose huge talent (Jake Murphy, for example) to the Utes over the next decade unless BYU is in a major conference and he won't survive.
So who else is out there? All of BYU's coaches have gone to Utah under Kyle. Norm Chow is close to retiring. Everyone else is inactive or just beginning to climb the coaching ladder. Really, can we think of any other young active LDS coach who would take the reigns after Bronco? I don't count the coach at Navy.
Doman doesn't count until his offense generates around 4 TDs a game and doesn't shoot itself in the foot with stupid mistakes.Last edited by Jennerstein; 09-24-2011, 02:14 PM.

I would have posted my take last night but there was a lot of good stuff coming from you guys so I held off. I now have a few thoughts if anyone cares.
1. Our special teams won that game. For the most part Stephenson has his punting moving in the right direction and Sorenson, after missing his first FG, has been nails. The blockers on kickoff return should get a lot of credit for Hoffman's return as the hole was as bug as a truck.
2. We should have kicked an FG on the the 4th and 2 when Nelson was brought in. We have a kicker that has 60+ yard range. We need to use that.
3. Riley being at the top of anyones offensive problems is laughable. He doesn't play enough to warrant that spot. Still if they are going to use him Doman needs to do a better job. If they had to use Riley on the 4th and 2 they should have rolled him out so that he has a run/pass option. If they truly wanted to leave someone in the pocket they should have just left Heaps in there. (With that said the pass probably wouldn't have been any better.) Nelson can be a playmaker for us but they have to play to his strengths which are speed and the ability to throw short and medium range throws on the run.
4. The running game was much improved thanks to Kariya and the O-line. It seems like Brian is hitting the holes a little harder.
5. I do not have a problem with using Ziggy on passing downs. He isn't quite getting to the QB but he's getting better. I'm almost died when he used a spin move. Most importantly he provides a little bit of rest to the real linebackers so that they aren't as gassed later in the game.
6. Can someone please explain to me why Hague doesn't play more?
7. Same stuff I said about Jake last week stands. If he could harness that arm and get a little touch on the ball we would have won by two or three TDs.
8. KVN is the best defensive player we've had in quite some time. Dude is all over the field.
