And I went upstairs to watch the game in a different room at halftime. The piano teacher came so I had to abandon the first room.

Note: watch future games upstairs starting at kickoff.
    Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

    • Best game of the year. Mostly because the cougars won me $! Triple daddy the hypes name is perfect. The defense has won two games this year, worst offense I can remember. Pumped for the emerald nuts bowl this year! Go cougars!

After going 0-2 in the Beet Digger shirt I switched it up this week and went back to a shirt I used to wear to games when I was in school.

Really? You do know that Ty was kept on staff during his last two yrs in the NFL to basically be a QB mentor...

His dad is a legendary HS coach in Texas, now Ty is a HC at a small school.

Let's just be honest about the coaching situation at BYU: Bronco is nothing more than a placeholder unless we get into the B12. Doman's going to get fired in two seasons without a guy like Detmer.

Ty couldn't go back to BYU until the fraud case was finished and he was exonerated entirely.

I'm sure he could use the paycheck, but I'm still not completely sold on his desire to coach in Provo. In fact, after seeing the beating the coaches are taking since the start of last season, I don't think I'd be horribly interested in the job either. Doman deserves some of the crap he's getting, but the way we turned on Anae is shameful, IMO.

In reaction to Bronco's hiring, a certain legend said: "Placeholder".

I came to like Bronco and so did this fellow. But Bronco is going to lose huge talent (Jake Murphy, for example) to the Utes over the next decade unless BYU is in a major conference and he won't survive.

Right now he's getting squat during the game. Doman tells him "good luck" during warmups and doesn't get back to him until the press conference.

Doman was terribly arrogant for thinking he could coach the QBs and call the offense at the same time when he's never done any OC work before. Right now the offense is taking up all of his time, and the QBs are getting shit for mentoring on the field. After all of Heaps' turnovers, he gets nothing from the coaching staff. No coaching, no advice, no suggestions, no motivation.

Compare that to Utah. As much as I think Chow has jumped the shark, he's known for mentoring and coaching QBs. Plus, they've got Brian Johnson who does nothing but watch the QBs and focus on them. This year, they've managed to turn a mediocre QB with a duck arm into a decent general who's increasingly comfortable in the pocket. What does Heaps have? Nothing during the game, and it's worse now that Doman isnt even on the field.

It's not just Heaps, look at how poorly Riley Nelson is performing as well, on the few plays he's been in the game. The only down conversion he got is on the option, something he's been doing in his sleep his whole life.

Doman needs an assistant coach to take over the QBs right now. Heaps is paying the price for Doman's arrogance.
I used these exact percentages when talking about Heaps' struggles the other night. I am not the most knowledgeable here for certain, and it's clear that Heaps has struggled, but Doman is doing him absolutely no favors at all. A truncated list of my general offensive coordination issues:

                        1. Riley Nelson
                        2. Play action on first down deep in your own territory
                        3. Running plays that are not moderately calculated (at least based on appearances) to get 3-4 yards on first down with any sort of regularity. Especially deep in your own territory.
                        4. No screens.
                        5. No TEs
                        6. Trying to run a two minute drill from your own 15 yardline with about a minute left to go in the half down by less than a touchdown when you get the ball back to start the second half and when you have sucked balls all half long.
                        7. Being so generally predictable with formations on certain down and distances that I can predict the play 75% of the time to my wife.
                        8. Failing to realize that a punt is a win when it's 3 and 15 from deep in your own territory.
                        9. Failing to make sure that your QB and receivers are on the same page when it comes to option routes (I saw not a few that were problems).
                        10. Abandoning the run (I didn't see this last night, to be fair).

I do think there is a chicken and egg problem here in that Heaps will improve as our coordination improves, and our coordination will improve as Heaps improves. But Heaps still hasn't started a full season yet (am I wrong on that now?) and any fall camp stats have to be discounted by the fact that (a) he can't really get sacked and (b) our secondary sucks donkey testicles.

I'm hopeful that things will get better. Cody Hoffman bailed us the hell out yesterday with that KR, and then UCF took over with the muffed punt. I want to see more what I saw of Brian Kariya last night. He is not elegant, balanced, skillful, fast or complicated. But he does his damndest to move the ball forward. Simple plays that get yardage on first down. Simple plays that get Heaps confidence. Enough risk adversity to avoid giving the other team points like we did last night. That may not be exciting football but it will win a few games with the defense we have. And if Heaps start's feeling it, start getting crazy perhaps. But let him feel it first.

Is that too much to ask for?

I pretty much agree with your post. I believe last night was his 13th start.

Game management at the end of the first half makes me want to swallow a bullet. Against Texas we're within Sorenson's range, but instead we try to get one more play. Last week we run two dangerous outs and are forced to punt giving Utah the ball back when 3 straight runs or kneels would have sent us into OT. And last night we do the same thing as you mention. I have no clue what the hell Doman is thinking in these situations.

I agree with all of this. Clearly, Doman understands the concept of constraint plays or he wouldn't run so much play action. The problem is that play action works to keep the defense from keying on the run, which isn't happening anyway. The defense keys on the pass, because Doman has demonstrated a lack of commitment to the run game. Unless the run on first down gets at least 4 yards, 2nd down is a guaranteed pass.

Why not throw a bubble every once in a while at the very least? Get the ball to your athletes in space! Draw up a slip screen for DiLuigi every once in a while to take some of the pressure off Heaps.

Even independent of Heaps' desperate need to have some easy throws to get him going, throwing downfield constantly is just bad playcalling from a schematic standpoint.

It doesn't matter because he'd be invisible in this offense. But Wilson and Holt were far bigger recruits than Murphy. Even Mahina was a bigger recruit than Murphy IIRC. So we lost him to Utah? So what? He wanted to play. He probably wouldn't at BYU. Good for him. He made some plays against a terrible BYU secondary. Good for him. But I think you're letting those 3 receptions on that drive color your perspective.
