Heaps has really been struggling on his short throws. There's a very good chance that he would throw just as crappy of a pass as Nelson.

Also we didn't call the time out, they did.

      Yes, that's what I said.

Thorson started he is 62, but then they rotated in 57. I just looked it up it is Famika Anae. Both THorson and Anae were absolutely terrible. Go rewatch the game and every single run and pass play focus on the the left guard spot you will be amazed and how often they get blown up.

        • Maybe I'm wrong but in weeks one and two it seemed we went unbalanced at time with Matt Reynolds flopping over to play alongside the Bradens. I don't remember seeing that this week or last week. Have I missed it or did we abandon that? It seemed to bs successful when we did it.

We haven't done it again since Ole Miss. I loved that play call. It did work. I don't know why we have gone away from it.

            • Why did Wagner start in front of KVN? And why was he not in as much the first half?

We did. It was to run power to that side, or threaten it and play action out of it. Interesting play.

Becaus e the coaches think Wagner is better against the run. I would agree when teams run right at them but KVN makes a lot of plays coming from the weaside in pursuit.

So we lost him to Utah? So what? He wanted to play. He probably wouldn't at BYU. Good for him. He made some plays against a terrible BYU secondary. Good for him. But I think you're letting those 3 receptions on that drive color your perspective.

Both those guys were awful last night. Not just awful, they were horrific. Hansen was as well. I think you pointed that out in a previous post. Did anyone notice when Hansen was blown up so bad that he made the tackle on BYU's running back for a 3 yard loss. The best part about it was he laid down and acted hurt only to return the very next play.

Still if they are going to use him Doman needs to do a better job. If they had to use Riley on the 4th and 2 they should have rolled him out so that he has a run/pass option. If they truly wanted to leave someone in the pocket they should have just left Heaps in there. (With that said the pass probably wouldn't have been any better.) Nelson can be a playmaker for us but they have to play to his strengths which are speed and the ability to throw short and medium range throws on the run.
This is what I mean when I list Riley Nelson. It's not a knock on him per se. I don't mind the mildcat here and there (the option play was particularly nice) and of course he's going to throw now and again just to keep people honest. He's not a converted RB, whatever MarkGrace may want to say. But the situational usage has been, IMO, atrocious.

I read that the unbalanced line was too confusing to our personnel and they complained to Doman about it. We ran some unbalanced when I was in HS and it was a mental leap to get it right, although I can't recall why.
Awesomeness now has a name. Let me introduce myself.

                              Noted. Thanks for the clarification.

Judging by his production against BYU, yeah he would.

Either Heaps is terrible, or our TEs are terrible, or Doman just doesn't use the TEs. I can't imagine it's Doman not using TEs, it seems like we have TEs lining up and running patterns.

But I also think some people put too much emphasis on recruiting rankings for players. It's why people keep on thinking that Heaps is just bursting at the seams with untapped talent after he goes 16 for 34 for 133 yards with an int and no TDs in his, what, 14th start? Austin Holt was a pretty big recruit and perhaps he would play like it if he were playing with Max Hall. We don't know what's going to happen with Murphy over the long run but he had a decent game against BYU.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”
