"Dear Tom Holmoe" - the thread for saying stuff to Tom Holmoe
I'm technically a native of Grand Rapids (moved to CA when I was 5) so it would have been cool to go back there, see some distant relatives, my Dad's grave, etc. But ultimately I decided to stay home and go to the game (game wasn't the only reason).
"It's true that everything happens for a reason. Just remember that sometimes that reason is that you did something really, really, stupid."
The church has a long history of taking a side of a position, making a stand, and then evolving over time to the point at which they deny the existence of the earlier stance. For reference see: Word of Wisdom as a 'suggestion' and later as a commandment; the Adam=God theory; Brigham Young deciding that blacks are the accursed offspring of Cain and denying them the priesthood AFTER Joseph Smith had already given the priesthood to a number of black members; practicing polygamy for decades claiming it to be the truest expression of the gospel, and then claiming that Joseph Smith either was never in polygamous relationships or if he was, that he never physically consummated those marriages, but I digress.
In this case the Brethren, and others who are far smarter and more spiritually in tune than you, have decided the proper course of action for the University and the Athletic Department is to become an 'Independent', to use the athletic programs as missionary tools and to maximize the exposure of the University and thus the church. This allows the University (Church) to tightly control the message and to steer the conversation in a direction pleasing unto the Church.
Part of this arrangement was the establishment of BYUtv. Now the University has its own television network on which to show some live and to rebroadcast select football games (ones which BYU won of course), as well as a wide variety of needlepoint and scrapbooking programs.
Now a potential offer to participate in the BIG-XII has come about. To accept such an offer would give the University very good exposure. However with this offer comes a heavy price to pay. The University will no longer be in full control of its 'message'.
This is where I, as an active church-going member, feel I must stand and say "Enough!" I am not amused when the Church changes its position on an issue. I strongly urge you to 'Choose the Right!" and remain independent. Buck the trend! Prove for one and all that when the Church says something, it means what it says! The will of God cannot change over time and likewise you should not attempt to destroy the great Independence which God hath wrought! To do so would shatter the testimonies of untold millions of souls.

p.s. not a bad post for #1800, eh?
Thank you, thank you, thank you. I have been told the "active LDS ute fan" is a figment of my imagination.

As you would describe the term, it IS a figment of your imagination. Anybody who is internally conflicted because his favorite collegiate sports team somehow conflicts with his church has other issues that of far beyond the scope of the topic.
At least half of the Ute fans are church members, and most of them realize that God doesn't give a shit about sports (beyond the 'men are that they might have joy' part, anyway). These are the fans that care about BYU only to the extent that the a) recognize its existence, b) recognize that their tithing dollars support its existence, c) realize it is a cheap and easy place for out kids to go to school and get married to a sweet spirit, and d) don't really care much at all beyond that, so long as they don't embarrass the rest of the church members at large by acting like cultists and changing the official church doctrines on a whim.
That said, it really IS best for all involved that BYU stays independent. That way they remain in the driver's seat.
Hey Tom - hope you get to take at least some of today off and just enjoy a football game. If you get a chance go check out the Grove. TripletDaddy will be there and he's always got good advice. He can also hook you up with the best virgin mixed drinks on the market.
I set foot in the great state of Utah yesterday for the first time in 7 years. My presence here is short lived, so the university better make a move on this big XII opportunity before my powers are once again transferred back to the midwest and all hope for BYU power plays are lost. Mr. Holmoe, you have less than a week. you have been warned.
Sincerely,
Doctor Coug
Oh, by the way, your name sucks. My phone keeps correcting it to hollow. I'm annoyed. I also blame this sucky avatar on the football team and some bozo committee member here that gave me a shirt for avatar.
"Don't expect I'll see you 'till after the race"
"So where does the power come from to see the race to its end...from within"
Rough weekend huh? One benefit of being a Ute is that the odds are better than even that if your team's getting smashed your blood alcohol levels are high enough by the time it gets bad that you're mostly numb to the worst of it. No such escape for us.
But hey - hope is here. Seize this moment. I know you'll make the best choice.
Don't worry about what's going on. Just know that many of the fans who would love to see you strung up have forgotten or don't know that the teams you played on while at BYU are better than any of the teams that have been under your watch as AD. Just remind them that if you never got blown out by your rival, either in SLC or Provo and the only real difference is that you're not in a uniform on the field. Perhaps if you suited up, you could teach the current team a thing or two, especially Uale who plays the same position that you did. It must be embarrassing to see others that don't have your ability on the field, eh?
Keep up the good work.
Sincerely,
il Padrino Ute

What's the point you're trying to make? I don't get it.

I'm just letting Tom know that he's doing a good job as AD at BYU, despite what the many alleged fans of that team think.
