That is not how I saw it. I think he was barking at Wynn just as much. There were guys open on deeper routes, they just weren't as wide open as the short pass. Wynn didn't look like he had the confidence to throw into tight coverage. He chose the obviously open receiver instead of the open receiver that would have gained 10 more yards on the play. I think Whitt was saying that Wynn needed to take some shots into the intermediate range more than we did(which was just about never).Originally posted by kccougar View PostWhittingham said as much in his post-game comments. Wynn's issues last night were not a result of injury.
Actually, I was a little surprised by Whittingham's comments. Listening to Kyle Gunther's post-game analysis, he had convinced me that the short passes were part of the game plan. But Whittingham went right after Chow after the game, saying they needed to throw down field more. So that wasn't part of the game plan? 1-AA corners. That does not bode well for the remainder of the season.*Banned*

Wynn last night finished with 4.4 yards per pass. That is dismal, it was lower than BJ's 5.9 yards per pass in 2008 against New Mexico. Listening to the radio this morning, they were saying that he was throwing downfield in practice, and during warmups? I can't fathom why he only made 2 downfield attemtps all night.
It's possible that Chow didn't want to showcase that part of their game, but I find that hard to believe. Is Wynn injured, and can't make those throws? I don't believe that either.
Wynn did complete 66% of those passes with 2 TD's and 0 interceptions, but something wasn't right last night.
Oh well, I wasn't expecting a win at SC anyway, hopefully we'll see some better offense.

I was there. They really didn't run guys deep very often. Even when they did, it may have been more to occupy the safeties so he could hit the TE.Originally posted by cougjunkie View PostThe question is (and you can't tell from shitty KJZZ so maybe JIC can tell us) did they have more receivers running deep routes and Wynn was not confident enough to throw it down field? On one play both announcers were screaming about a guy wide open down field and Wynn threw in to triple coverage.
He also overthrew a receiver on teh 2nd drive about 35 yards downfield and frankly it was not close.
The play in question, McNabb was running free down the right sideline, about 30 yards downfield, and Wynn, who was running to his right tried to hit Matthews 10 yards down at the sticks. In all honesty, it was a good throw in a tight space. It seemed like Matthews had a pretty good chance on it.
I'm not sure if he didn't see McNabb, or didn't think he could get it down field on the run (he wouldn't have had time to setup as he was being chased).

I'll have to go back and find the quote, because I think he said, "And that's on us as coaches" after he talked about not throwing down field. Of course, he could just be covering for his QB as any good coach should do.Originally posted by Jarid in Cedar View PostThat is not how I saw it. I think he was barking at Wynn just as much. I was impressed with White too. I understand what you are saying that we could just line up and shove that defense 5 yards down the field, but there were several times when White was able to get extra yardage on his own. Dude runs downhill and is tough.Originally posted by smokymountainrain View PostYou're too down on Wynn and too high on White. White hasn't proven anything yet. He's fast, but fast guys are a dime a dozen - superior teams can always run the football on far lesser teams.

I heard this morning from Hans on 1280 that White IV missed one too, leading to a sack. So the 2 sacks are not all on the O-line, maybe not at all.Originally posted by Jarid in Cedar View PostThe first sack was on a miss by Vakapuana on blitz pickup
EDIT: White's mistake was on the second sack. He didn't see the blitz. Experience counts, and now he has it. I am sure that play will be discussed in the film room.Last edited by LA Ute; 09-02-2011, 09:19 AM.“There is a great deal of difference in believing something still, and believing it again.”

I noticed that in the first half Wynn seemed to watch only one receiver on passing plays - in fact he seemed to keep his eyes locked on his primary the whole play. In the second half he seemed to actually make some reads. Maybe he was told to do that at halftime, maybe he just got more confident. On most of his short passes it seemed that he was pretty much bent on making that play - and he did complete almost all of them. It's hard to know if focusing on the short pass was his decision or Chow's. I tend to think it was Chow's.Originally posted by Scorcho View PostWynn last night finished with 4.4 yards per pass. Just saw this on the Ute board:
Horrible news. Prayers for the Tongaonavai family are in order.Last night, on the way home from the football game, the wife of Ute reserve lineman Ron Tongaonavai was killed by an alleged drunk driver. The sister of Tongaonavai's wife is in critical condition after the accident. Let's all send our good vibes there way. I also feel like this might be a good time for another fund raiser . . . . just saying“There is a great deal of difference in believing something still, and believing it again.”
