  • Your secondary, non BYU/Utah football loyalty goes to....

(Sorry if this thread exists - didn't know how to search for it)

Pretty obvious w/ some of the CUF crew (HFN, Triple etc) but who do the rest of you find yourselves invested in? Or cheering for? Or cheering against?

Outside of BYU, Cal is the only school I find myself emotionally connected to. I know the city of Berkeley well and I love it. It was my pre-mish alma mater. My bro did his Phd there. It's just over an hour from where I grew up. And if I drill into my identity I guess I really feel I'm three things - An American, A Mormon and a Californian and Cal is the institution that best projects the third as it's really the California university. Also, I dig bears.

On the next level down from that I find myself cheering for Penn St just because... dunno, Jo Pa probably. Somewhat oddly I'm also generally sympathetic to USC, mainly because going back to the years of Rodney Peete, my best friend's family were all big UCLA supporters and I used to feel compelled to cheer against them while I was a kid and they were feeding me pizza while we watched football. In that phase I had a Rodney Peete poster on my wall alongside Steve Young and Robbie Bosco. And for some reason I really disliked UCLA in those years.

On the dislike fronts - I've been pretty consistent in hating Miami over the years although that's softened recently since I actually spent some time in Coral Gables and got to know the university a bit.

I generally loathe Oregon because my opposition to hegemons and tyrants forces me to oppose anything affiliated with Phil Knight. Also because of the field-soaking shenanigans of 1990. But Chip Kelly has made it more difficult for me to dislike Oregon.

Florida I hate and hated long before Urban went there - Steve Spurrier was my original cause for despising them. More recently, Tim Tebow's extroverted born-again-ness combines with the general filthiness of the institution to create a perfect hate cocktail.

Over the years I've always rooted for Michigan over Ohio State, mainly because I generally prefer to cheer for the school with higher academic standards. Also because Ohio State scarred me deeply as a 7-year old, by obliterating us in the 1982 Holiday Bowl while Michigan proved far more accommodating in 1984.

I go through cycles on Notre Dame, lately maintaining a high degree of hatred owing to the fact that their two most recent coaches have been hateable bastards and they had consecutive QBs in Quinn and Clawson who really elevated the hate factor.

Oklahoma has had a special place in my hating heart going back years both because (a) Barry Switzer, (b) Barry Switzer, (c) the general perception that Nebraska was the classier outfit in that rivalry.

Texas I've disliked a lot in recent years and even moreso under Mack Brown - Not a fan of how they stole a national title from USC (yes, I recognize I open myself to broadsides by talking about anyone "stealing" anything from USC, but Texas somehow managed) with nothing other than one player and no offensive gameplan other than to let that player run wild.

I think that about covers it. Now all my prejudices are out in the open.

I would say that other than Utah it would have to be Michigan because I did my Grad work there and had season tickets for two years and usually I go see 2 or 3 games a year. Not to mention they are rarely on at the same time as the Utes so I can watch their games on tv.

        Oklahoma

I was living there when I became aware of college football and have always had a soft spot for them.

Steve Owens came and spoke at our little league football banquet the year before he won the heisman.

I may be small, but I'm slow.

Intriguing - I'd actually love to. And one of my old mission comps is now a cosmetic surgeon in Eugene so he cld fix my face after I get mixed up with some of your Duckish hoods.

I'll have to see how my schedule plays, but watch out, I might take you up on this.

No one really. Growing up, I wasn't much of a college sports fan. In the area I lived, Notre Dame and Michigan were the most popular teams. I followed both of them to some extent, and was nominally a Michigan fan, but I haven't kept up with either of them in years (though I'll watch them on TV if they happen to be on).

I'll generally watch a couple of games a week outside of BYU, but BYU is the only team I am at all passionate about. I guess I could always choose UNC as my secondary team, since I'll be sending a lot of money their way for the next few years, but this year seems like a bad time to start being a UNC fan.

I am only loyal to BYU. There are other teams I like to watch because of players and style of play (USC, Boise State). And I will root for teams like Boise State to beat the big boys. But I have no other loyalty.

I now live smack dab in the middle of 'Bama/Auburn country (quite literally as one neighbor is a huge Auburn fan and the neighbor on the other side of me is a booster for Alabama). I can't cheer for either one. I've tried to pick a side and I just. cant. do. it. I dislike them both. I suppose if either of them hired a coach that I found reputable, I might pick a side--but not now. Incidentally, I had zero problem cheering for the Utes during the Sugar Bowl.
People ask all the time. It makes me laugh how big of a deal it is to some folks around here, they need you to pick. So Ive chosen UAB and Samford as my loyalties around here. (Btw, going to a FCS game is a lot of fun, like going to minor league baseball. If you get the chance to go, you should.)

I also dislike tOSU intensely. I think it stems from my dislike of Jim Delaney and the Big 10/11/12 or whatever it is now, but they get the benefit of the doubt every year and it drives me nuts. It makes me a Michigan fan by default, though I have no loyalty to them whatsoever.

Sadly, there are more teams that I root against than I root for, and that's in large part why I gave up the NBA. A lot of that has to do with their fans (Nebraska comes to mind).

As far as teams that I root for? I tend to find myself liking the old guard--guys like Bobby Bowden and Joe Paterno. I know Bobby's not coaching anymore, but you get the idea. And even though they are generally pricks, I find myself pulling for TCU all the time. I like Gary Patterson and I hope he owns the Big East.

The mighty Syracuse Orange. It's been a difficult decade but the 'Cuse is on its way back. The Carrier Dome is a loud venue (when full) and their history is exciting to read about.

Oregon is another team I favor. My 2nd son is a HUGE duck fan and HFN is a stud when it comes to tickets and hanging out. He's a definite and good ambassador for the program. Plus, he's always good for a youth t-shirt for my son.

I dig Cal, like ox. There is something exciting about the campus, and the renovations to memorial stadium should be great.

I LOVE the service academies and will watch their games whenever on. Army, though down for awhile, has always been my favorite. When I was living back in ny, I visited the campus and the stadium/campus is absolutely the most beautiful setting I've seen for a football game save RES. I have a good friend who is an alum of west point and we share a hope for them to get an invite to the big east, which is a move that I think would greatly enhance the program.

It's impossible to turn an autumn game from big 10 country off the tube on a brisk Saturday afternoon. Michigan, PSU, Sparty, are 3 that I can't usually turn off if the UTES or 'Cuse aren't on.

I've tried to like Virginia Tech but there are so many obnoxious Hokie fans around here that it makes that difficult. UVA are lovable losers and I have enough UVA alums I associate with that I cheer for them when needed.

Speaking generally, even if I hated a big-time program, I'd hit a game just about anywhere. We used to live in College Station, and watching aTm games at Kyle field is awesome. I absolutely love the tradition/pageantry of college football. It helps it maintain an element of amateurism that is otherwise slipping away quickly.
