The Big East expansion groundswell thread

2 billion over how many years? How much of a cut do the basketball only schools get vs. the football only schools?

My guess, when all is said and done, they will have an NBC/Comcast deal that will net a football only school 6-7 mill... My guess is that Indy will pay better than that.

Supposedly 15 years, officials were saying in excess of $150 million yearly for whole conference. Not sure what football-only schools get. If we got 7 million a year for Tier 1 & 2 football-only rights, I don't think that's a bad deal.

But since I'm a fan, I guess I don't really care about how much BYU makes, so long as:

1. I can watch them on TV
2. We have a conference title to play for
3. We aren't locked out of big bowls and a potential playoff

I guess by the criteria above you could put me in the pro-BigEast camp. The prospect of years and years of seasons consisting only of exhibition games isn't appealing to me. But then again, aside form the crappy TV deal, I didn't mind the MWC.

Teams will play eight-game league schedules once the conference expands from eight teams to 12 in 2013. The conference is expected to grow to 14 teams in 2015. That's when Navy joins for football only. Brigham Young or Air Force is expected to join Navy, according to multiple sources at the spring meetings.

When thinking about the BigEast, it is helpful to remember that football-only involvement in a Western division leaves a schedule of:

Boise State
SDSU
Houston
SMU
Air Force (if they join)
Memphis
Either USF or UCF
A longstanding BigEast school

The non conference slate then can be:

Utah State
Utah? Otherwise a likely power conference opponent.
Notre Dame
Hawaii
13th game courtesy of going to Hawaii every other year (this could be an ESPN special venue game)


A schedule like that is about perfect for BYU. Reasonable regional games for the most part, plus higher profile Boise, ND, Utah (maybe), and ESPN brokered special venue games. Not a cake walk, but not too challenging either.
