Poor Temple. First the Owls get kicked out of the Big East. Then they are invited back...but don't receive acknowledgement.Originally posted by LiveCoug View PostLooks like it's official... Memphis to Big East
By my count, that now gives the Big East 12 members?
UConn
Cincy
Louisville
USF
Rutgers
BSU
Navy
SDSU
UCF
Houston
Memphis
SMU
12 seems like a good number... Wonder what that means about Louisville leaving for the Big 12, if anything.
Nearly a decade after Temple's moribund football program was pushed out of the Big East, the revitalized Owls are rejoining the conference -- and bringing along their potent men's basketball team.
The school will move to the Big East for football next season and all other sports in 2013.“Not the victory but the action. Not the goal but the game. In the deed the glory.”

And Temple will play in the BE's Western Division in 2012. There has to be a serious push by all BE members to add another western school, because that's a ridiculous setup, and one that won't easily be rectified when Navy joins in 2014.Originally posted by Paperback Writer View PostPoor Temple. My guess would be if Louisville goes Big 12, and that league doesn't look west, that the BE will give a huge push to BYU and another western school to get to 14 teams. (That adds up, right?)
Would playing in a division with SDSU, Boise, Houston, SMU, Memphis and aforementioned unknown western school be good enough for BYU? BYU would almost be certain to have full say in who the 14th team is (AFA?) and it could demand an 8-game league slate as well, meaning just one trip back east and four non-conference games.
There are many more items in play here, and I'm not going to say this is a better alternative to independence -- I think arguments can be made for both sides. But like Shoganai said, the Big East's courtship of BYU is not dead by a long shot.

Throw in a home game with USU and they could pick up a Neutral site game and their schedule would be 6 home games, 5 away and one neutral (Utah in Vegas or SOCAL?)
That is about as good as independent would get them."Be a philosopher. A man can compromise to gain a point. It has become apparent that a man can, within limits, follow his inclinations within the arms of the Church if he does so discreetly." - The Walking Drum

Obviously not as good as the Big 12 or Pac 12, but yes it is better than independence IMHO.Originally posted by Mormon Red Death View PostHere is their 2014 schedule:

There is absolutely no way Utah will play BYU anywhere away from RES in 2014. We're already on the wrong end of the 5-4 split in conference games that year, meaning at least two of our non-conference games have to be at home.Originally posted by Mormon Red Death View PostHere is their 2014 schedule:

And BYU has two open dates in September for that year (and in 2013 as well) and their home-road setup thus far shows no hardship in hosting Utah in 2013 and making a RES return trip in 2014.
The longer we go without news on the 2013 schedule, the more certain it is that we re-ink a two-year deal with BYU. And for us NOT to play BYU in 2013-14, we have to find two opponents willing to do a home-and-home, one of whom would have to be willing to come first to RES (because we would have to be fools not to pursue a 7-game home schedule).
Right around the time of this year's rivalry game, I expect to hear news about a new two-year series between Utah and BYU.

Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!
For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.
Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."
