Okay, hold on. What have I claimed to be an expert in? I'm suddenly curious here. I have said I know something about sprinting. But my knowledge is admittedly not from a degree or anything, but from my own experience with it.

My name is taekwondave so yes, I would say I'm an expert in taekwondo to some extent.

But what else? Where have I even implied that I thought I was an expert? This is just kind of a weird thing to say to me now that I've thought about it.

          Yeah.

Dude I'm really getting called out for this running thing. Obviously people don't buy it. Should I set up some kind of bet? I think if the price is right I'd be willing to alter my training for a few weeks to prove I can do it again.

If you make exceptional claims (like being really fast) you tend to get an exceptional response. But otherwise I wouldn't worry about it too much.

As for the claims that 40 time is overrated. Disagree.

NFL uses a metric for evaluating running back's. Normalizing 40 time to weight, and take an average. Something like (40 time * 45 + weight)/2. This is extremely accurate in predicting who will be a successful running back in the NFL. I don't have any inside info, I just read an article on this a few years back. Very interesting.

If there was ever a textbook on how to troll, this thread deserves a chapter. Start with a title about Drew Phillips to draw people in, and just keep fueling the fire with exaggerated humblebragging. Well done sir.

A huge part of the speed training course that I wrote deals with that. For every action in sprinting you need to create an opposite reaction. As you strengthen your hip flexors, if you don't strengthen the shoulders that throw the arms forward simultaneously, you're not tuning your engine right. Good comments. But I maintain the hammies are a little more important that you're giving them credit for. Either that or my form needs work
I should clarify regarding hamstrings that they are the critical sprinting muscle. You only can change your turnover rate so much, good sprinting form can maximize your stride length but hamstrings are the key to propel you forward at top speed. In acceleration mode (which ought to be anything below 50-60 meters) you aren't running upright and should not be using your hamstring as much. The more upright you are the more you use your hammy.

On your running form. If you were to stop dead at 10 meters (hypothetically of course) would your body lean result in you falling to the ground? If not, your form needs work. You should be driving throughout a 40 yard dash and never hit upright. I love watching the combine guys because you can tell who has been taught to run and who hasn't. It is hilarious to see a guy get into a three point stance, stand up, then start running. A few days of good track coaching would make him much, much faster.

There is precious correlation to what a player does mechanically in a 40-yard sprint and anything that is done on a football field.

Strap on the heavy helmet and pads and actually try to run a football play, and your ability to burn by people is largely related to stride length (and your strength in powering through attempted tackles). The taller guy will almost always outrun the shorter guy, regardless of who supposedly has the fastest 40 time.

Moreover, the ability to simply be elusive and leave guys behind you is based primarily on precision of movement and quickness in changing direction. Remember, Jerry Rice was not an especially fast receiver, and Reno Mahe stuck around the league for years, simply because he was shifty.
Hm. I seem to remember Barry Sanders wasn't the tallest guy on the field by any stretch of imagination and he was pretty good at outrunning people in the open field (after, of course, dodging nine guys behind the line of scrimmage). So I'm not sure I buy that putting "heavy pads" on suddenly gives all the tall guys a huge advantage. There are different sizes of pads and different weights. I'm not sure that effects the smaller guys much more than the bigger guys.

As for the most useless metric in football, it isn't the forty. It's the bench press. They do both at the combine. I at least can see why they do the forty but how many times a guy can put up 225 lbs is about as relevant as how many chick-o-sticks he can eat in an hour.

I know. I really didn't mean to do that. I'm actually kind of embarrassed. I deserve the flack I'm getting. I know better than that. Can we just ignore that I ever said anything about it?

The important thing about this thread is Drew Phillips. That guy, I don't know if you've seen his highlight video from high school, is amazing. He is still the player on the team I am most excited to see play. I was just worried that the REASON I was excited to see him play was going to disappear after training for a year with Coach Omer. I was pleasantly surprised to hear that it will not. That was the point of the thread. My apologies for making a fantastic claim that served as a distraction. I would much rather talk about Omer's training methods, or Phillips' speed, rather than my own. I should never had dropped that bomb on this thread.

This is actually one of the big reasons I think a 40 time is overrated - on its own, it takes into account no other physical characteristics.

Division I running backs with impressive 40 times are a dime a dozen. But you don't have NFL quality unless you also pack a punch when you hit the line, which is why I think the weight-speed metric is probably a very good predictor.

The second reason, as I mentioned, is that rarely are the mechanics of a real 40-yard dash even roughly approximated during the course of a football play. And, no one gets their raw speed timed when wearing full gear.

Hmm. You're going to have to explain to me the quantum physics involved in how a shorter guy who gets from point A to point B in less time than the taller guy is somehow still "outrun" by him.

Is it the distance of 40 meters specifically that you don't agree with? Are you making the assumption that over the whole 100 yards, for example, that regardless of who has the faster forty, the taller guy gains a significant advantage due to stride length, muscle size, etc? I could see that. I could see how the 40 time isn't maybe the GREATEST metric for deciding speed, since it is possible for 100 yard speed to matter so much in football (or does it? Other than kickoffs, how often do you care who is faster in the 100?).

Can you explain why you think this?

Hm. So how should it be calculated? In full pads? I could see that. With a ratio related to their height and weight? I could maybe see that. But those kind of tell you other things. I still think there is value in knowing that if your guy has moved around tacklers, and is now in the open field, you've got six points.
