I think JinSLC is right about you MPfunk. First of all your comparison to Doman is completely off base since Doman actually had NFL experience before taking the BYU job. The only thing BJ had was tutoring from Andy Ludwig. Which one was more qualified?

Doman was more qualified, neither was qualified for the position they were given.

This is not the place for Ute fans to be bickering with other Ute fans (unless it's Il Pad vs SU or everyone vs SloanHater). This is the place for Utah and BYU fans to bicker, along with apostates and mullahs; Jazz vs Lakers; Republicans and Democrats; lovers of the xbox vs PS3 lovers; Radiohead fans vs non-Radiohead fans; and Utahns vs non-Utahns.

But I understand, you're still learning the CUF culture.

Finally! On a serious note, I think Chow's best days are long behind him. He's an upgrade, but I think Utah could have done much better.

              • Maybe this has been said already. One thing that surprises me about this hire is that KW has completely shut down Chow run offenses. KW seemed to know what Chow would call before Chow knew. Chow is great, but KW seemed have his number the last several times they met. Including the USC game.

It's been 9 year since that USC Vegas Bowl (which is the last time Utah's played a team with Chow as their OC). I don't think that's a real factor.

Obviously it isn't a factor. And it should not be a factor. I was just thinking back to the last few years of the Chow era at BYU. Whittingham seemed to own Chow. As a BYU fan it was frustrating. I wasn't surprised when Utah shut down USC.

Perhaps they both know this. Maybe it will help chow to be a better OC.

                      Perhaps it's just wishful thinking.

Yes, Utah shut down Chow a decade ago.

However, TCU, Boise, Notre Dame kept Utah to 13 points.
Utah's offense went nowhere in the 2nd half vs. AFA. Considering the suckitude of Wyoming, the offense had it struggles there with turnovers and generating few sustained drives. This all happened last year.

Chow may not be the answer, but I feel pretty confident that he'll bring more to the program and the offense than if he wasn't at Utah.

If anything, perhaps Chow can develop play calling signals that TCU won't be able to steal.

I think that team had a 6-6 record. Everyone shut down SC that year.

Just like everyone has shut Chow down the last 5 years.

                          • Latest chow update per ESPN:
                            http://insider.espn.go.com/ncf/featu.../20110114#6118

One of these days, Rick Neuheisel will get his house in order, but it apparently won't happen anytime soon. Neuheisel told Adam Maya of the Orange County Register on Thursday that, contrary to numerous reports, San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Mike Johnson has not joined UCLA as its new OC, which means that Norm Chow is still in that position.

"Mike and I are old friends and we've had conversations and he's interested in this wide receiver position," Neuheisel said. "But it hasn't been determined in what role he'd coach and how that would all get pieced together. ... Mike is not hired here. He still has a lot of other offers out there. And Norm Chow is still on our staff. Absolutely."

Whatever you say, coach. As we alluded to on Thursday, perhaps Neuheisel is trying to finesse his way out of having to pay Chow's buyout, but it's pretty clear that he no longer wants Chow around.

As for the defensive coordinator opening, which actually exists, Neuheisel might be running out of options. Two of people said to be near the top of his list, Stanford DC Vic Fangio and San Diego State DC Rocky Long, are all but off the table (Fangio is expected to return to the NFL, Long was promoted to head coach). Neuheisel said he has "made a number of calls" but didn't want to divulge names. Asked specifically about former Miami coach Randy Shannon, Neuheisel said, "Randy is a great coach and I've gotten to know Randy. I wouldn't rule him out, but I can't tell where we are on the process."

Neuheisel also made it sound as if the Pistol might be a relic in Westwood, which makes sense if he's bringing in an NFL coordinator.

                            • Sounds like we should start posting Chow speculation in the Bg 12 Expansion Groundswell thread.

                              • One thing for sure that this thread has taught me is that every Ute fan should be thrilled about the Tim Davis hire. There is clearly no downsides to the hire or anything that we should be concerned about with Tim Davis. If there was anything negative to say about Davis, cougjunkie would have already filled us in.
