For me, the big deal is a commitment to change the offense and hopefully evolve a coherent offensive game plan that will impact recruiting in that players will be recruited with a specific idea on how they will fit into the offense. We have been recruiting the "best available althlete" for the last 7 years, and then trying to figure out how to run an offense with what is available. That philosophy is not going to cut it in the Pac-12.Originally posted by TripletDaddy View PostWow big surprise. I found out when junkie sent me a text. I didnt even know this was on the radar. Here is my simple view on this matter:
Is NoCho a step up from Utahs current position? I think so, definitely. It is a great hire for Utah.
Don't know if he will be able to work his same SC magic given the lack of horses at Utah (we saw how well he performed at Fucla with no horses) but I still think he will be able to contribute in a significant way.
To a previous question posed in the thread, no, NoCho did almost no recruiting at SC. That was all Ed O, Pete, Kiffen, and Petes son Brendan to a large degree. Mst everyone agrees that Norm is not a people person. That being said, who cares? Whit can figure out recruiting on his own and use Norms brand recognition to aid in recruiting, even if Norm isn't going to physically be going door to door on the recruiting trail.
One thing is for sure....it just became a heck of lot easier for Utah to recruit QBs over the coming seasons. Very few OCs with Norms resume.
This hire all but makes LaVell the defacto coach of the Utes. There are BYU fingerprints all over the place. No. He is Rivals national football reporter. No one inside of Utah has said anything that substantial.Originally posted by falafel View PostIs there anything out there to substantiate this other than the tweet? Who is that guy, anyway? That said, he made his coaching name at BYU. Cougar coaching DNA has a wide spread in the world of football.Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!
For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.
Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

Shocking analysis. Let's see insult to the current staff, check. Statements about how this is a ultimately a bad move for Utah, check. I do think you forgot the part how Utah will never beat BYU again though and how Doman is so far and away a better OC.Originally posted by cougjunkie View PostThis is good for both Utah and BYU. Good for Utah because Chow is obviously an upgrade over Schroderick. Good for BYU because Chow is not the answer nor the guru he once was. The game has passed him by. I would say Utah and UCLA have similar talent and Chow was unable to get anything going. He struck out at Tennessee and was mutually relieved of his duties at SC. He does not recruit (although rumor has it he landed Su'afilo so maybe there could be a transfer after a mission) and he clashes with a lot of people. I can see him lasting 2 maybe 3 years tops. But like I said it is an upgrade over what they had.As I lead this army, make room for mistakes and depression

Not so odd, IMO. Just smart. BTW, it's not widely known but Chow was Machen's choice for the Utah job over Meyer. Ironic that Bernie later hired Meyer at Florida.Originally posted by myboynoah View PostYes, not good.
Odd though, if Chow had been offered the HC job, we still would have taken it.“There is a great deal of difference in believing something still, and believing it again.”

Did Chow turn the job down? If so, not the smartest move.Originally posted by LA Ute View PostNot so odd, IMO. Just smart. BTW, it's not widely known but Chow was Machen's choice for the Utah job over Meyer. Ironic that Bernie later hired Meyer at Florida.Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

Are you unaware that nobody associates him with being at Utah as an undergraduate when discussing his coaching credentials and accomplishments?
Chow is a BYU guy, he learned from LaVell. Utah has done well using BYU talent to improve it's program. It is a wise strategy.Fitter. Happier. More Productive.

Tom Dienhart is a national writer for Rivals. Lya Wodraska is the beat writer for the Trib.
