Leaves open that he could leave after his freshman year, I guess.
Wow, UofUtah coaches advising Hansen not to leave on a mission.

      I'm not surprised.
      Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

I'm even less surprised that you're not surprised. In fact, I'd be surprised if you were surprised. Not surprisingly, the whole matter is unsurprising.

Week by week Hansen dispelled the notion that he couldn't play quarterback at the next level, and now he'll get that opportunity next year with the Utes.

The past Sunday Hansen and his family met with Utah assistant coaches Norm Chow and Jay Hill, and everyone agreed that it was in the best interests of all parties for Hansen to compete for the starting job next fall instead of going on his LDS mission first.

He'll graduate from Lone Peak after the high school basketball season, and be able to enroll at the U. early enough to compete in spring ball.

I know it's Satan's paper, but the Tribune makes it a little clearer.

Chase Hansen was originally planning to go on an LDS Church mission in July 2012. But the Lone Peak star quarterback has decided to delay his mission until January 2013, giving him an additional six months in the Utah football program.
"He's still planning on going on his mission in January, whether he wins the job or doesn't win the job. His mission is really important to him," Brian Hansen said.

Sounds like the Hansens and the UofUtah are in damage control mode. Or is this the UofUtah's way of keeping this kid from straying during his two years away? What do the rules say if he hadn't enrolled and then left?

Yeah, for sure. Best to lock this kid in before he gets any crazy ideas, like "following the spirit." BYU's lost too many recruits due to that kind of craziness.

Very simple, if they enroll for 1 semester, they would have to sit one year if the transfer. He was planning to enroll in the spring all along which would invoke the Reilly rule. The plan to play in the fall is new. But even if he left for his mission in fall of 2012, he would be protected from poaching because of attending this spring.

Personally, I think leaving in winter 2013 is about planning his return. Better to return in the winter of 2015, get spring and summer under your belt, to be able to compete that fall. Returning in the fall guarantees a lost year just getting back into playing shape.

I can see that, but wouldn't he have been able to figure that out on his own? That the coaches were part of the discussion suggests he might really be able to compete for the starting QB job. Good for him, but kind of scary of the the UofUtah. If he ends up playing significant minutes, I bet he delays his departure for another 45 years.

Gary Crowton had a similar choice with Ben Olsen. Looks like the UofUtah is learning from that mistake.
