    • I hope The Chevelles play some of their bigger hits, like "mama said" or "will you love me tomorrow."

      Fitter. Happier. More Productive.

We want to expand recruiting to Australia. And they can't serve Honest Tea at BYU.

Hans was really talking up Hoffman before last season, if you'll remember. He proved to be right about that.

            1. He may be more physically gifted than Hoff, but that doesn't mean he'll learn the system any faster. I recall reading last year that he was pretty raw in terms of technique, understanding, etc.

            2. I think this is a definitely a plus, but learning to play with a QB in a complicated system is a far cry from just going out and running some pretty basic stuff at camps or whatever.

            3. Apo redshirted due to injury, which I'm sure significantly impacted how much time he was actually able to spend on the field during that year. I'm guessing he didn't get the same number reps in that other redshirts potentially do.

            4. Bring the hype!
My response to your negative Nancy stuff: Catching footballs isn't rocket science. He'll figure it out by the time the season starts.

The ward is providing the dinner and breakfast so I don't have to cook. Technically we will be sleeping in a tent, so I suppose there is an element of camping to it.

Since the Gobinator found out about it, that is all he has been able to talk about. Last Saturday he woke up really early, came into our bedroom at about 7AM...he is all dressed. He announces that he has made his bed and brushed his teeth and is ready to go camping (he was a week early). His excitement is softening my heart towards sleeping in the dirt, smelling like smoke, and sitting on folding chairs all evening. I'm still keeping it real, though. No way in hell I am using one of the toilets there and if Goby has to go, he is on his own.
Not to continue the threadjack but you and I should take our respective sons (and daughters and spouses, if they are interested) camping next time I am in Utah. I will show you how it's done the old school way, and your son will love you forever. I believe I'll be there in November.

ha. I'm assuming you watched our receivers last year, so maybe catching footballs is a little harder than you're giving it credit for.

No, I get that it's not rocket science, but there's definitely a lot to learn, and there's obviously a big curve to this stuff for a young receiver. As I already noted above, it took The Hoff at least half the season last year to reallly figure things out, and while I'm on the Apo bandwagon with everyone else, I still expect to see some similar things from him in the early going. The discussion Sizzle and I were having here is whether or not he'll be in a better position to not go through the same early growing pains as Hoff. Sizzle offers some points, I offer some counters. But clearly the kid is going to catch his fair share of footballs.
So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

The only thing that sounds worse than camping is camping in November.

I see you've never camped in the south in august. Nothing like crisp cool 90 degree nights with humidity and giant mosquitos everywhere.

Puleese. Try February. Except in Texas - prime camping season.

November is still hunting time in Utah, depending on choice of weapon and prey. So I've done lots of camping. We'd camp in S. Utah anyway.

                        • Allow me to board the Apo hype train:

I attended the spring game/practice last year and he looked like Randy Moss out there against our secondary.

Footwork across the board by the receivers looked very crisp. Each step seemed to be deliberate, and their seemed to be an increased emphasis on timing and being in a certain spot (rhythm with QBs). There seemed to be more hard planting and selling routes than I previously remember seeing.

Yes, Ross redshirted last year, but his injury was with his hands and not with his feet. Working on things like footwork doesn't require a finger to be at 100%. You can pick up a lot of subtle things on film and in sessions. Don't under estimate the bond though between a QB and his receiver. Part of what made Max Hall so great was the trust that he developed with Dennis Pitta and Austin Collie, to the point that they would go and work out on their own time refining routes and timing. Yes, there is a big difference between running routes at a camp and actually playing in a system together, but the trust factor and the little things like knowing the types of balls that Ross can go get, where he like the ball put, etc. make a big difference. Those are things that are learned over time, and Ross and Jake have a head start.

Again, I don't think Ross will be an All-American receiver and Heisman trophy candidate and a sure 1st round draft pick. But I think he has some advantages over Hoffman in picking up things earlier. It also helps to have a QB who isn't learning on the job as a true freshman, but somebody who has 10 games worth of experience. Honestly, that will probably be the biggest reason why Apo adjusts easier than Hoffman; he'll only have to worry about one QB, and that QB won't be going through all the growing pains that he did last year.
