  • My tip to comfortable camping.

    A. Sleep in an RV.

    B. If RV is unavailable forget the sleeping bag and get a good air mattress. Put a fitted sheet on the air mattress and use a duvet for your covers. Bring a couple of quilts in case you need to regulate temperature. This replicates my setup at home and I sleep far more comfortably than just using the air mattress and a sleeping bag. Plus if the hottie from the next tent over wants to visit it's much easier to snuggle rather than trying to cram her in my sleeping bag.

    C. Ambien

I may try to head down to practice but my little league team may scrimmage that morning and I have a date.

    • The Ross Apo hype machine is in full force on 1280 right now.

Jan, I love you, but most physically dominating receiver in the state since Kevin Dyson? I think Apo will be really really really good... but it's a little early.

Since the Gobinator found out about it, that is all he has been able to talk about. Last Saturday he woke up really early, came into our bedroom at about 7AM...he is all dressed. He announces that he has made his bed and brushed his teeth and is ready to go camping (he was a week early). His excitement is softening my heart towards sleeping in the dirt, smelling like smoke, and sitting on folding chairs all evening. I'm still keeping it real, though. No way in hell I am using one of the toilets there and if Goby has to go, he is on his own.
Guess you can't damper the enthusiasm of the little guy. My favorite part of camping is hanging around the fire making s'mores at night. I genuinely enjoy that part of it, but I pretty much hate everything that comes after. Tents, sleeping bags, sleeping on the ground, boo! That's why my preferred form of camping is at Mr. I's beach house. Hang around the fire pit with some sand, take a shower and sleep in a bed.
So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

Cue the MarkGrace is getting worried about expectations comment!

Ross clearly has the physical attributes, but remember how lost Cody Hoffman was at the beginning of last year? Remember him running the wrong routes? Remember how he would go one direction and the ball would go another? Remember how he and Jake took at least half the year to get on the same page? I'm definitely expecting more than a little of that from Ross.

          • But I will say Jan is not exactly a hype machine. Remember his prediction about the Cougs last year? The guy is not afraid to give a less-than-enthusiastic review, so if he's on board, I'm getting excited!

Jan was very positive, and I think he has a lot of reason to be.

I think the learning curve for Ross will be significantly less steep than is was for Hoffman, because of the following:

              1) Apo is flat out more talented than Hoffman
              2) Apo has a long history with Heaps where they have thrown the ball around at camps across the country; it isn't like learning a new receiver
              3) Apo has had the last year in the system as a redshirt; even though Hoffman also had a redshirt year, I think Apo probably received more focus an attention than Hoffman did, as I think everybody was counting on Apo being a difference maker, whereas Hoffman was more of a surprise
              4) New staff. I'm buying the Cahoon hype, based on what I saw in the spring

I would not be shocked to see Apo be the best WR in BYU history by the time he leaves the program. I'm not expecting it to happen, but I wouldn't be surprised if it did. The limited practices that I saw of him, he looked like he would be able to make an Austin Collie like impact early on, only with better size. He's got a ways to go to catch Collie, but IMO the skills are there to do it.

What are the things Apo will struggle with the most early on? Getting off the line? Making reads against zone defenses? It seems last year that he did have an issue running the correct routes before he got hurt, and it was mentioned again after Saturday that he'd made some more mistakes in that regard. To be expected on the first day of practice with a new scheme.

It will be intriguing to follow Apo during camp and the first few games with him being such an unknown and having no real idea of how Doman plans to involve him.

I think your priorities are a bit messed up unless you're taking your date to the practice.

Would you mind telling us what you saw in the spring that has you willing to buy the Cahoon hype? You may have posted it before, but I don't recall reading it. I'd be interested in hearing what sorts of things Cahoon has done to improve the receivers.

My Negative Nancy (ie., the LiveCoug Lifetime Achievement Award) considerations for each point:

                          1. He may be more physically gifted than Hoff, but that doesn't mean he'll learn the system any faster. I recall reading last year that he was pretty raw in terms of technique, understanding, etc.

                          2. I think this is a definitely a plus, but learning to play with a QB in a complicated system is a far cry from just going out and running some pretty basic stuff at camps or whatever.

                          3. Apo redshirted due to injury, which I'm sure significantly impacted how much time he was actually able to spend on the field during that year. I'm guessing he didn't get the same number reps in that other redshirts potentially do.

                          4. Bring the hype!
So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.
