So I'm watching the Ducks/Beavs game wondering what people have heard about the Unga that transferred here. I remember reading before the year started that people thought he had a good shot to start on the outside next year. I guess CJ has Fua at that spot, but that kid still looks seriously skinny to be a full-time starter.Originally posted by cougjunkie View PostYou guys realize who we have back next year? (bold are my projected starters)
DE- Dulan, Manumaleuna, Bronson Kaufusi, Troy Hinds? Luke Kaumatele?
DT- Tuiloma, Fuga, Brock Richardson, Russell Tialavea
OLB- KVN, Uani Unga, Ziggy Ansah, Alani Fua, Tyler Beck, Kevan Bills
MLB-Ogletree, Stout, Jorgensen, Kaveinga, Spencer Hadley, Butch Pauu?
CB-Hadley, Buckner, Comer, Johnson, Everett
S- Bills, Galea'i, Sampson, Sorenson, Mees, Hague, Gaines, Kautai
QB- Heaps, Nelson, Hill, Lark, Munns, Mangum?, Kuresa?
RB- Alisa, Quezada, Hine, Jamaal Williams
FB- Pritchard, Mendenhall
WR- Apo, Hoffman, Houk, Jordan Smith, Brett Thompson, Dylan Collie, Rhen Brown, JD Falslev, Cody Raymond
TE- Holt, Wilson, Mahina, Muehlman, Friel, Oneill Chambers
C- Tushaus, Vaitai
G- Hansen, Reynolds, Mulitalo, Kafu, Freeman
T-Brown, Matthews?, Stringham, Yeck, Kahailai
This team is loaded. The defense right now is top 20 in the country and top 10 in pass efficiency. I see us being even better next year.
Also, any chance Tree gets beat out by Stout next year? And what about Sorensen? Does he stay at safety or return to an outside LBer spot at some point? So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

I agree on Fua. Unga is solid but not nearly as good as his brother who had a great game against the ducks. I have Fua there but I actually think we might see a KVN/Wagner type situation Fua being the pass rushing specialist and Unga playing against the run.Originally posted by MarkGrace View PostSo I'm watching the Ducks/Beavs game wondering what people have heard about the Unga that transferred here. I'm starting to find some intrigue in the Hawaii game. Particularly if Riley is cleared to play.
It seems like Riley's greatest strength has been his mobility - which allows him to scramble and find time to throw, but also run to convert.
If he plays on Saturday, I can't help but think that the play calling will avoid putting him in running situations. This isn't to say he won't end up running now and then - I just don't see there being a large number of called QB runs.
So we get to see Riley playing what I would call a more traditional BYU offense - either handing off the ball or throwing it.
I have to admit - I'm curious to see how he does. Particularly since Hawaii has to know that while he "could" run - he is unlikely to do a lot of it. And while he can scramble to extend plays - he would be smart to not extend them to the point of exposing himself to being knocked around a lot.
Should be a fun game to watch...

I'd bet that he is being coached to slide if he does take off on a run. He's enough of a competitor though, that he's likely to ignore what is in his best interest to get that extra yardage for a first down when needed. I just have a hard time believing that he can play any way other than 100% sacrificing of himself. Which is good and bad, more bad though after a broken rib.Originally posted by Eddie View PostI'm starting to find some intrigue in the Hawaii game. Particularly if Riley is cleared to play.

I think we might see some added emphasis on the quarterback slide but other than that they are going to let Riley be Riley.Originally posted by Eddie View Post

Having Riley play is probably better for Heaps, the only way he gets a chance to start in 2012 is if Bronco sees continued failure from Nelson, it doesn't matter how much Heaps progresses over the offseason. And Bronco will discount most of Nelson's failure in practice because of the "gamer" effect. Too bad Hawaii is an awful football team who got blown out by UNLV.

I'm sure we'll see Riley being Riley. He will run when he's going to run. He will still hit folks. He may or may not slide or head out of bounds. I'm sure he'll still take a hit to try to continue a play or make a pass.Originally posted by Shaka View PostI think we might see some added emphasis on the quarterback slide but other than that they are going to let Riley be Riley.
What I'm saying is this HAS to affect playcalling to a degree. I just can't imagine Doman calling very many QB option or draws. Maybe he will - but I don't see it. I think Riley will be throwing it or handing it off. When he runs, the majority will be him improvising.

If Doman has to adjust the playcalling for Riley then we might as well go with Heaps. Taking away designed runs because of his ribs limits his effectiveness. Besides, he was getting lit up in the pocket when he got hurt.Originally posted by Eddie View PostI'm sure we'll see Riley being Riley. He will run when he's going to run. He will still hit folks. That's what makes it interesting to me. Seeing how Riley has developed/progressed as a passing QB.Originally posted by Surfah View PostIf Doman has to adjust the playcalling for Riley then we might as well go with Heaps. I get that he was lit up in the pocket to be injured. But now that he's been hurt - you know that Hawaii is aware of it and will be looking to pound him anytime he runs. Being tackled and having an extra defender pile on to add to the weight crush when you are healthy is one thing - having that happen when you have healing ribs is another.

How do you think he has developed or progressed sitting on the sidelines for the past 2 weeks?Originally posted by Eddie View PostThat's what makes it interesting to me. Seeing how Riley has developed/progressed as a passing QB.
