This is more a shot at the Utah fans who think the USU game is now a big rivalry and should replace Utah at the end of the season.

They are also probably the same Utah fans who already see CU as a huge rival of yours...even though you haven't played each other in what, 50 years or so?

Not to give Utes any ammunition in a time like this, but I bet the Utes don't five a flying f*** who their rival is right now and when they play them.

Who cares if we're Utes fans? I highly doubt Boise State will be allowed to play on Thanksgiving weekend because some conferences don't allow it. Utah isn't playing BYU in November either and the rivalry is going to end soon IMO after scheduling Utah State, Chris Hill sounds like the rivalry might end for a while. I'd rather play New Mexico St in early October instead of late November and move USU to create some intrigue. I'm sure Y fan will be disgusted with it, but I will eat crow if many BCS teams outside Notre Dame play BYU in November.

Yes, but after we seen the outcome of the game, I think it has become a legit solid rivalry, no where do I think it comes even close to the Holy War at all, but it's a game where I think that if and probably when BYU continues to have a struggle to schedule November games, scheduling the USU-BYU game in November adds a ton more intrigue than a lower end C-USA, WAC, or MWC game. As someone who watches both, I'd rather see them play each other than watch both play other lower end teams in November.

Like I said, I do think the BYU schedule will and already has shown it will be better in the future, but I'm not so sure any of those games at all really will be in November, which is what BYU needs to try filling up, Utah State is a good team to fill-in to the November scheduling bind.

USU is a school that BYU has a reason to play other than sheer scheduling desperation, but that's about it. About half the teams in CFB would excite more fan interest.

Given how weak our scheduling hand is, Boise State is probably our best shot for a late season game that has some local and perhaps even national interest. Cmon, Broncs, you know you wanna.

I'm not going to suggest to BYU fans who I think their rival should be. If it were up to me, Utah and BYU would play every year, and better in November than not at all. For our situation, I prefer the September game, but not so much so that it's then or never.

The idea that Colorado could immediately replace BYU as Utah's biggest rival simply because of its spot on the calendar is ridiculous. I also thought it funny when some BYU fans in the late 80s suggested Wyoming was a bigger rival, or SDSU in the early 1990s, or Hawaii ever.

I'm a believer in rivalries creating themselves rather than being manufactured, although sometimes they happen by accident (see Notre Dame-USC for an example of how this happened). That very well could be the case with BYU.

I think we can agree that almost all great rivalries have a geographic tie, are usually contested with something more significant than regional pride at stake and/or have great finishes or wildly-unexpected results more often than not.

Maybe USU will be that game someday for BYU, but I use the word maybe in the same sense as a golfer who makes eagle on his first hole might maybe win the tournament. It's a ridiculously premature assessment to make.

If by late-season, you mean mid/late-October, you're probably right. Only two of the games are played after Oct. 15.

I think you missed my point. What I'm saying is that they don't have a clue if they think simply putting USU on the end of the schedule will create a rivalry or that BYU fans getting excited about coming from behind to win the game with a 90+ yard drive led by a backup QB suddenly indicates that Y fans see it as a big rivalry they are excited for each year.

I am saying that the same fans who see it as such are likely fans who are thrilled to pieces about playing such a great team as CU.

Please don't misconstrue this to mean that they shouldn't be excited about being in the PAC12. But I would hope that "most" Utah fans would back me if I were to postulate that there are likely 9-10 other PAC12 teams they are more excited to be playing than CU.

You simply can't invent excitement for an upcoming game. It's either there or it isn't. USU is a nice instate rivalry game. It is not one to generate a lot of excitement.

I think we agree more than disagree. I won't suggest that USU will never be the biggest rivalry game for BYU - because who knows...50 years from now could bring a lot of change in both programs.

I suppose what I am suggesting is that the BYU-USU game is about as exciting for Y fans as the USU-Utah game is for most Utah fans. It's fun because it is an instate rivalry game. But there are others on the schedule that you are more excited about. And there will always be some in the fanbase who view it as a step down in competition and being more important to USU than it is to Utah/BYU.

You can say the Big East is better, but I bet Utah State will be a much more compelling matchup on the schedule than anyone besides ND on their future November schedule, good replacement instead of Idaho, SJSU, or NMSU. I really do, at least the fans have a reason to show up with the excitement of the last few years compared to NMSU at 8:15 PM. The only reason I look forward to that 'heated' () CU-Utah rivalry is the fact that CU isn't very good either.
