This has actually been a problem at times in defending physical running games and it's not ideal.

In the golden linebacking years of 2006 and 2007 we had guys with much bigger bodies who were also fast - Jensen, K Popp, Wagner (all played over 240) - the subsequent parade of Bauman "he's small, but he's slow" types hasn't been super awesome at ILB. Kaveinga brings us back the other direction.

This is where I was going with Beck being small. He can probably play the position but there were a couple years there where our linebackers just couldn't shed their blockers. I figured that had something to do with weight (and probably talent and technique) and am afraid if we go really small again we'll suffer against the run game.

Holy cow Ross Apo is legit. He is big and fast and has really good hands.

I am definitely buying the Apo hype.

He had two very nice TD catches in one on ones today, one where he made a sick move on the DB and plucked the ball out of the air. That drew a lot of "ooohhs". The other was just a post pattern but he planted and then just outran the DB. Heaps threw a nice ball for an easy six. BYU doesn't get receivers like Hoffman or Apo very often. To have two of them for Heaps next few years is a very exciting though for BYU offensively.

A few other notes from practice yesterday, as partaining to the adjustments in coaching:

1) Doman/DuPaix bring a nice attitude to the offense. The intensity and tempo more closely matched the defenses than I remember. I was impressed. I think DuPaix really will have been a great hire.

2) Kelly Poppinga reminds me of a younger Bronco. He looks the part of a football coach.

3) The WRs all seemed to have improved their routes. Very crisp. There were more drops than I had hoped to see, but not as many as there appeared to be last year.

4) A variety of formations were used yesterday. A good mix of shotgun, under center, double tight ends, single backs, I-Formation, etc. Not sure what that will actually translate to when it comes time to play games, but it was interesting nonetheless.

what do the offensive line spreads look like? Are we still wide when in the shotgun?

Honestly, I couldn't tell much difference. But between trying to wrangle two boys, answering frequent questions about who was what number and watching everything else, I probably paid the least amount of attention to the OLine.

yeah, that's one of those things that if you're not looking for you probably won't notice.
