I feel what Ma'ake is going through. Giving up BYU is a lot like giving up any other addiction in that when you are put in a position of temptation, you fall off the wagon. To a Ute fan, watching Bronco spinning it at BYU Media Days must be be what it feels like to be John Daley walking down Bourbon Street. It is too much temptation to overcome.
Fortunately, I was on the lovely beaches of San Diego when it all went down, so I'm only just coming back to the scene of Ute fans realizing what just happened. I feel like I just walked into the opening scene of The Hangover.

You are our rival. I promise. Please be secure in this knowledge and leave us alone on this subject.Originally posted by Blueintheface View PostMy comments were directed to Flattop and Ma'ake who want to pretend that BYU isn't their rival. I didn't mean to suggest there were rules for rivalry smack, far from it. But I will use the free will that the Honor code and Carrie Jenkins has given me to call someone out who repeatedly suggests they've left their former rival behind only to continue to post on the subject. They may continue to post on the subject but they better be prepared to be called a warthog faced baffoon and other unseemly names.“There is a great deal of difference in believing something still, and believing it again.”

I had a great conversation with a Ute fan the day after BYU's media day. Really, it was a lot of fun.Originally posted by U-Ute View Post...Fortunately, I was on the lovely beaches of San Diego when it all went down, so I'm only just coming back to the scene of Ute fans realizing what just happened. He asked me "So, if BYU going independent is such big news, why aren't they advertising it?"
I explained to him - News is news. It is what news outlets report. News is information that people want to have, which is why the news outlets report it. Ads, on the other hand, are paid for. When you have an ad, you are paying to tell people about something because it isn't news. They are different. You don't advertise news.
So when ESPN and all of the local TV News stations show up to at BYU to report on BYU's media days and BYU being an independent - that is how news is dispersed. It is reported.
I told him I could understand his confusion since the U has taken out space on local billboards to advertise that they are now part of the PAC12. Which is an example of advertising - paying someone to report something for you...because it isn't news.
All kidding aside - I wholly expect there to be a great deal of coverage when the PAC12 has their football media days. With the U joining a new conference, I expect it to be covered locally at least as well as the Y's media day.
But it was kind of fun leaving a dork of a U fan speechless for a few minutes.

I find reports of these types of conversations funny. I also have a feeling that the majority of them are embellished and often times made up.Originally posted by Eddie View PostI had a great conversation with a Ute fan the day after BYU's media day. Really, it was a lot of fun.

I don't doubt that these kinds of reports are often embellished. I also don't doubt that there are BYU fans who say equally stupid things at times.Originally posted by Hot Lunch View PostI find reports of these types of conversations funny. I'll even admit to more often than not keeping my thoughts to myself - and thinking what I want to say rather than actually saying it.
In this case, I will even admit that to a certain degree I felt like I was taking advantage of someone who entered the discussion unprepared for a conversation anywhere above 3rd grade level. And that more often than not the Ute fans I speak with don't fit the stereotype of being drunk goatee-wearing overly tattooed morons like this guy did.
But when you are in a grocery store checkout line and the uneducated redneck dork behind you in line makes some stupid comment about "If BYU going independent is such big news, why don't they advertise it", sometimes you have to say something.
