There was a time when I was "All World War II, all the time." At some point I expanded my interests but it didn't mean I cared any less about WWII.Col. Klink: "Staff officers are so clever."
Gen. Burkhalter: "Klink, I am a staff officer."
Col. Klink: "I didn't mean you sir, you're not clever."

It was 2nd place, you jackass. 2ND! I can't believe people have forgotten that already, after all the trouble we went through throwing that awesome parade and everything.Originally posted by Eddie View PostSo - either you two are very happy having your team go undefeated and yet not participate in the national championship game...or...you two were the grand marshalls of the grand parade for 3rd place and somehow convinced yourselves that it was more than that.
I mean - the article and ensuing discussion isn't just about BCS bowls and being undefeated. I thought we were talking about the goal being a national championship. Are you saying you have one of those? (In football, I mean...please don't refer me to your gymnastics team.)
So, the only thing missing from Utah having a shot to play in the BCS championship in 2008 was that Kyle Whittingham wasn't saying in July 2007 how they should be playing for the championship when they went undefeated? Am I understanding this correctly? Did someone just smack me really hard with the stupid stick?
Utah did everything they possibly could have in 2008. The system is what it is, and Utah did absolutely everything they could within the system. So, yeah, I'm happy with how it turned out.
I guess it's just being satisfied due to low expectations, or something.

this is my point. the system is the system is the system. talking about bcs championship games when you don't even have the same bcs arrangement as notre dame is dangerous. i do think having lofty goals is admirable. but, make them attainable. with byu's schedule the way it is right now, i don't see it happening with the cougs getting a shot at a title, but a bcs bowl isn't out of the picture if they go undefeated.Originally posted by Senioritis View PostIt was 2nd place, you jackass. 2ND! By the way. i am not one of the ute fans that wants to see the rivalry die. it is fun, it is passionate, and it is one of the best in the nation. i don't subscribe to colorado as our main rival, but hope that a good rivalry can develop with colorado as well as other teams in the pac12. i hope byu can get a good rivalry going with notre dame and several other schools in the country - i.e. texas or oklahoma. but, those rivalries will never be a rivalry in the same sense that utah/byu is a rivalry.

The way I figure it. BYU is guaranteed a spot in a BCS bowl at #2. In order to play in the BCS Championship you have to finish in the top 2 regardless. With the exposure ESPN provides, it makes it easier to get into that #2 spot. Bronco isn't aiming for a BCS bowl. Sure BCS bowls are nice, but what's the big deal about them other than money? BYU has plenty of money and tons of exposure through their current contract. It's all about the championship.Originally posted by OrangeUte View Postthis is my point. the system is the system is the system. talking about bcs championship games when you don't even have the same bcs arrangement as notre dame is dangerous. i do think having lofty goals is admirable. but, make them attainable. with byu's schedule the way it is right now, i don't see it happening with the cougs getting a shot at a title, but a bcs bowl isn't out of the picture if they go undefeated."To the man who only has a hammer, everything he encounters begins to look like a nail."

how do you feel about byu playing in the cotton bowl after the '96 season? was that not a big deal?Originally posted by WashingtonCoug View PostThe way I figure it. I'm choosing to mostly ignore your fatuity here and instead overwhelm you with so much data that you'll maybe, just maybe, realize that you have reams to read on this subject before you can contribute meaningfully to any conversation on this topic.

I'm more interested in knowing CUFs plans for this year's tailgate party so if a BYU fan could please post that we will win a NC in the next 3 years and bring this discussion to it's logical conclusion I would appreciate it. In fact, consider this that post.

Didn't Dave Rose make a similar comment about NC aspirations? Why doesn't he take the same heat? Because he's not...Bronco?
The uproar over this comment really makes Ute fans look silly. You're in the PAC 12. Act like it.
It's also sort of telling that there seems to be more reaction to the NC comment than to "the better team didn't win" thought. At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah

I don't understand the hubbub either. BYU isnt playing for a conference championship anymore. What else is there?Originally posted by ERCougar View PostDidn't Dave Rose make a similar comment about NC aspirations? Why doesn't he take the same heat? Because he's not...Bronco?

I suppose Bronco could say, "we have no goals this year," or "we prefer to not publicize our goals."Fitter. Happier. More Productive.

I was excited about it, but nothing even close to a national championship. It's obviously better than the Vegas Bowl, but not even close to the feeling of being in the championship.Originally posted by OrangeUte View Posthow do you feel about byu playing in the cotton bowl after the '96 season? was that not a big deal?"To the man who only has a hammer, everything he encounters begins to look like a nail."

I think Ute fans as a whole find Bronco to be entertaining, more than anything. The guy has a knack for setting himself up.
BYU nation is more susceptible to hype with sub-optimal prospects for attaining what they want than any other program I've seen. For example, in the summer of 2002 Jay Omer was going to make BYU into one of the fastest programs in the nation. Lavell had let the program go, Crowton was a genius, the sky wasn't the limit - it was outer space.
In 2008 we had the "Quest", which itself was funny, but the next year, everyone sort of kept hush on the slogans, but it was understood that with all those seniors it really was BYU's year to reclaim their rightful place among the most select programs. Sure enough after the Tulane game there were radio ads touting the "BCS Bustin' Cougs". When senile Bobby Bowden demolished that dream the meltdown was epic. Vesuvius. THEN, BYU nation convinced themselves they could be the first BCS busters with one loss. It's a remarkable exercise in group delusion, a rite of summer, and early fall.
This year is another hype-a-thon, and Bronco has jumped right into it, head first. By October a lot of Y fan will be livid, of course, like MLM rookies who've woken up.
Bronco's just weird enough that one day he'll drive his Harley out onto the field dressed as Captain Moroni, and start speaking King James English - which wouldn't be far from his current dialect, but it will be interesting to hear the small business consultant-speak with a Biblical flavor.
It beats watching baseball all summer, I'll tell you that.Last edited by Ma'ake; 07-18-2011, 08:04 PM.
