I find reports of these types of conversations funny. I also have a feeling that the majority of them are embellished and often times made up.

I don't doubt that these kinds of reports are often embellished. I also don't doubt that there are BYU fans who say equally stupid things at times.
I'll even admit to more often than not keeping my thoughts to myself - and thinking what I want to say rather than actually saying it.
In this case, I will even admit that to a certain degree I felt like I was taking advantage of someone who entered the discussion unprepared for a conversation anywhere above 3rd grade level. And that more often than not the Ute fans I speak with don't fit the stereotype of being drunk goatee-wearing overly tattooed morons like this guy did.
But when you are in a grocery store checkout line and the uneducated redneck dork behind you in line makes some stupid comment about "If BYU going independent is such big news, why don't they advertise it", sometimes you have to say something.
I will add - to your point about embellishment - I don't recall the exact words that I used.
What I do recall is saying something to the effect that News is what is reported by people like ESPN and all of the local media that went to BYU's media day. You don't advertise it because it is news. An example of advertising is the U's PAC12 billboards - when you pay to tell people something because it isn't news.
I may be more eloquent written than spoken, but the gist of the conversation did not change.
If this wasn't clear the first time around - I was just having fun with a dork of a Ute fan. I have no doubt the U's transition to the PAC12 will get the same coverage here. And I would even submit that if they haven't already, BYU will do some advertising of their football independence - at least while attempting to sell tickets.
But you have to admit - sometimes when a rival fan is being a dork, it can bring a measure of joy to get them to shut up.
Yes, I have referenced BYU recently, but I am hardly obsessed. As I just said, I haven't totally stopped caring, I have just managed to care less than I used to.
You seem obsessed with not being obsessed with BYU.
Prepare to put mustard on those words, for you will soon be consuming them, along with this slice of humble pie that comes direct from the oven of shame set at gas mark “egg on your face”! -- Moss
There's three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who's got the same first name as a city; and never go near a lady's got a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, everything else is cream cheese. --Coach Finstock
I am hoping that this is the beginning of our summer meltdown. If I am accurately understanding what I have been told about the tradition of CUF, there is an annual meltdown associated with the dearth of sports talk.
I was under the impression that it usually occurred in the foyer, and that last year, with conference realignment, it sort of didn't really happen at all. As such I missed it, and for that I am sad .
I really hope we are currently melting down, or on the brink of a melt down.

We need an explosive post or news development.
