I'm not sure what the hubbub is about Utah not doing well in the first year, nor why it is such a touchy subject. It is a big change, the level of competition is going up, and everything will be new. When BYU goes to the Big 12 as rumored, they will fare similarly.
        Fitter. Happier. More Productive.

I would still take Utah's secondary over every team but TCU and Air Force.

It looks like you are relying solely on yards per game. Nice cherry picking of stats on that one.

              1. TCU 8 96 197 10 48.7 942 4 85.4
              2. BYU 8 131 252 12 52.0 1451 13 107.9
              3. Air Force 8 111 197 7 56.3 1193 6 110.2
              4. San Diego State 8 142 270 6 52.6 1731 14 119.1
              5. Utah 8 153 248 8 61.7 2017 12 139.5
              6. Wyoming 8 109 179 8 60.9 1523 14 149.2
              7. Colorado State 8 130 196 3 66.3 1686 14 159.1
              8. UNLV 8 120 193 3 62.2 1763 16 163.2
              9. New Mexico 8 117 189 2 61.9 1661 17 163.3

Utah was also 5th in the conference in PED. Not great, but I think that makes it maybe close when talking about who had the worst pass defense. I think you would have a really hard time arguing that Utah's pass defense was actually worse than New Mexico, UNLV, CSU, and Wyoming. Yes, people put up more yards per game on Utah, but that is also because they actually had to pass against Utah. Against those other teams, they beat the shit out of them early enough in the game that they could rely on the run.

I don't disagree. There would be similar problems.

Teams were also forced to pass on Utah because we did a very good job stopping the run.

I think I would be fine. Plus, those stats don't tell the entire story.

No it is the only stat that matters, cougjunkie is right that we are clearly nowhere near New Mexico in ability to stop the pass. We should fire Whittingham and hire Locksley.

That same argument would affect their PED as well then, if Utah knew the pass was coming they should have had a much better PED. TCU stopped the run as did BYU during conference play yet they still managed to have good pass efficiency defense. Or maybe Kyle should not have sold out to stop the run and committed more guys to pass defense.

Here's a question: How comfortable are Ute fans with their current quarterback situation?

Even if Wynn does "recover". From what I've heard he might be permanently damaged goods and not only physically.

It's a rather tenuous situation going into the new conference.

Robles might be the answer....but if/when Wynn gets knocked out or pulled from another game due to injury or poor performance, then Robles (assuming he beats out Shreeve and the other Freshman signee their bringing in) will be put into quite the refiners fire. That doesn't bode well for 2011...but could prove fruitful in seasons beyond that.

So they were 5th in the conference in PED and last in yards per game but you would take them over everyone but TCU and Air Force? That makes sense. Including a BYU team that was just as good at stopping the run but much better at stopping the pass.
