BYU v SDSU Open Thread

Let me add one other thing. BYU had a ton of false starts last night. This was due to SDSU running that 3-3-5 and Jake being a freshman needing his line to get set and he needed to take extra time for his presnap reads. If you watch the game the lineman were not jumping early like they did not know the snapcount they were caught leaning. Its hard for those big lineman to stay in their stances for that long.

Also on third downs BYU was 12-19, and SDSU was 3-10 that might explain some of the TOP.

According to Wrubell in the postgame show, BYU was 12-12 on 3rd downs of 5 yards or less. If that was true, then they were 0-7 on 3rd downs of longer than 5 yards. That speaks to the importance of putting yourself in good yardage situations on first and second down.

One other guy who I haven't seen a lot of praise for in the thread, but I came away very impressed with, was Josh "Juice" Quezada. He seems to be a more powerful runner than JJ, and more "shifty" than Kariya. I'd like to see Juice get more involved in the offense.

I agree Quezada had 10 carries for 51 yards. JJ 22 for 134 and Kariya 22 for 85yards. I would like to see Juice and JJ with 22 and Kariya with 10.

Is it possible that they were deliberately taking their time snapping the ball so as to run down the clock? Serious question; I didn't see the game.

I don't think so. I think that may have been an added benefit, but with so much going on with the 3-3-5 Jake was waiting and taking extra long making his presnap reads to see if SDSU showed something. If they were waiting to run it down they would not have been set for 20+ seconds. They could have waited and then got set the last 10 seconds of the playclock.

There are typically 3 or 4 coaches in the booth, sometimes more. Reynolds has been in the booth for as long as I can remember.

I've never been a Bronco hater, and I don't get wrapped up in his comments, but I can't let this one go. After the game, Sammy Linbaugh was interviewing Bronco on the field. She asked him about SDSU or something like that and he mentioned that they played a good game and then said "Its a shame there can't be two winners."

They mentioned several times during the telecast that they asked Anae during the week which player personifies the attitude they are trying to get from the offense. Kariya was the answer.

Great example of a game plan where you decide not to let your QB lose the game for you no matter what. Turned out to be exactly what we needed. I was very impressed with the O line. You could hear the pads popping on run plays. Wow, very physical.

On Bronco as D coordinator. Very happy with the overall result. I liked how we went to nickel. We didn't get too creative out of it, but I trust that's because it's the first week they worked on anything besides the base package. The zone blitz fooled them on the first two critical pass plays: 3rd down on first drive where Bryson gets the knock down and then the next series when Ogletree gets the INT. I'm happy with the play and hopeful for the future, but I really wonder why Bronco promoted Hill and let it get so bad in the first place.

Why didn't Manamaleuna play much? I thought he'd be critical with Fuga going down but he didn't play even 50% of the downs.

Very happy with Van Noy. He's going to be a stud.

On the two fumbles: when BYU didn't get the fumble it looked like the ball could have been out of bounds or someone touching it could have been out of bounds before BYU got it. Diluigi's was pretty obvious: it came out and the SDSU guy had a hand on it immediately. Pretty bad replay decision.

On the PI at the end, it could have gone either way. Fortunate for BYU because it was thrown behind Chambers, but not a bad call.

No comment on Heaps. I think we've seen what we're going to see from him this year. He has a long ways to go but he's putting in the time. I have faith he'll get there. BYU coaches need a way to find a way to win while developing him slowly, which is exactly what they did Saturday.

Blaine Fowler was absolutely convinced that they wouldn't ever snap the ball before the play clock hit 10. And he was right for the entire game. It seemed pretty deliberate.

My only comment on the game that hasn't been mentioned is that it was nice to see guys on defense not named Andrew Rich making plays. It seems like for the first 5 games of the season, if the defense made a decent play, Andrew Rich was always within 3 yards of it. He had a quiet day on Saturday, which tells me that there were 10 other guys out there generally getting their jobs done. That was great.
