A note on the 3-3-5 and how to attack it. I have read over and over that the weakness of the 3-3-5 is the run and the small front lines you face with it. That seems intuitive, but it is not the case. Traditionally New Mexico and Bronco's BYU 3-3-5's were very strong against the run and comparatively a little weaker against the pass. I don't know why and I've never understood it, but that is the case. It's a fallacy to believe the way to beat Rocky Long's 3-3-5 is with the run. That's another reason the running success was so impressive to me.

Mendenhall said freshman OLB Kyle Van Noy "has proven to be capable of making football plays."

Not much new on injuries from Mendenhall. He said Eathyn Manumaleuna is having shoulder issues so his play was limited vs. Aztecs.

My only comment on the game that hasn't been mentioned is that it was nice to see guys on defense not named Andrew Rich making plays. It seems like for the first 5 games of the season, if the defense made a decent play, Andrew Rich was always within 3 yards of it. He had a quiet day on Saturday, which tells me that there were 10 other guys out there generally getting their jobs done. That was great.

KVN single handedly(as much as that is possible in football) stopped a SDSU on a series in the 2nd Qtr. His recognition of the swing pass was immediate and he ran completely across the field. He is also the one that chased down the running back on the long run showing he has some wheels. Sure he is learning, but the dude has talent.

Is Van Noy one of the guys who had run-ins with Hill? KVN always seemed to have a ton of respect for Bronco (after all, he agreed to sit out a whole year for the guy). Here's to hoping that KVN listens to every single thing Bronco tells him from here on out and his development takes off.

Seriously, at what point in your football life are you taught to carry the ball this way? This was a fumble just waiting to happen. I was yelling "Tuck the ball!" at my TV for about 2 seconds before it was stripped.

I agree. One thing I will say about Matthews is that he seems to find a way to go open much more than our other tight ends.
