Were you guys asleep at the wheel last season? Heaps had his ribbed popped out against Utah when he was hit by a defender. The trainers popped it back in at half time and he played the rest of the game. He also played against Utep, but it was mentioned that the injury was still bothering him some and after the season he was going to take time off to let it heal. None of this is news.

It takes 8-10 weeks to heal a rib fracture. This injury would be in the same ballpark.

No. Heaps was anointed the starter and did well enough to not lose it in practice. Did you actually think that Nelson was actually allowed to compete against St. Hypes for the starting role?

The only problem is that he didn't show any of these soft tendencies in the 2nd half of the Utah game or against Utep (while he was actually playing with the injury). However, it's possible that in the offseason, as the injury possibly took longer to heal than expected, he took on this mentality of self preservation. Then he opens against Ole Miss with a big corner blitz and all of a sudden we get what we're seeing. Though I've always thought, and still think, he was mostly fine through the first three games, all things considered. It was against UCF and Utah St. that he really droppped into the shitter, and I think the only significant event between those games was getting booed at the end of the Utah game and seeing the crowd's exuberance when Riley entered. I think that messed with his head more than anything else so far.

I think the team had rallied around him at the beginning, but started backing off when Heaps started showing his arrogance in remarks to the media. That kind of stuff is toxic to a team. He believed his own hype and when he lost the rapport with the team, he was clueless how to get it back and played like an automaton against UCF and USU. Benching him, is probably going to be a very good thing for him, if he works through it and earns the rapport with the team again.

His slow start last year didn't bother me in the least as I played it off to inexperience, poor coaching/qb selection. I think it's becoming clear based on comments from some players that he possibly never really had them. Or, at least, he didn't have certain key guys with a lot of sway. I think there are guys who always wanted Riley and it was an easy sell after Jake's inconsistent play through the first handful of games.
