I once asked a friend, a DesNews insider, why they hired Harmon away from the Provo Herald when he really wasn't a journalist as much as a Total Blue Sports kind of guy. The answer I got was that the News was trying to expand its national (on-line) reach, and their data showed that stories about BYU sports were among the top attractions for out-of-state readers in the paper's internet editions. So they brought on Harmon to give that demographic what it wanted. That does make a lot of sense, as much as I can't stand reading most of Harmon's stuff. IMO, his rant on ESPN about Utah going to the PAC10 kind of finished off whatever reputation he had as a journalist. But that's not really why he's there at the Deseret News anyway, it seems.“There is a great deal of difference in believing something still, and believing it again.”

I think that's a sound strategy, except that Harmon is a moron. I'm sure gman would be 100x better.Originally posted by LA Ute View PostI once asked a friend, a DesNews insider, why they hired Harmon away from the Provo Herald when he really wasn't a journalist as much as a Total Blue Sports kind of guy. Personally, I'm glad that someone in Harmon's position is such a bufoon. He has so many golden opportunities to raise Utes' blood pressure, and he just fritters it away being the BYU idiot. When a true genius appears, you can know him by this sign: that all the dunces are in a confederacy against him.

Exactly. Don't lots of newspapers have these kinds of homer newspaper hacks? I don't read a lot of the smaller regional papers (like the D-News), but when I was browsing the links during the BYU independence thing, I was a little surprised at how homerish and completely uninformed the scattered columnists were. No, it really wasn't even that that surprised me--it was the apparent complete lack of effort to even figure out the motivations behind the move that did. Even the Dallas Morning News guy, who I assume was the TCU beat guy, just spouted the same drivel about how BYU suddenly thought they were too good for TCU. Much like Harmon's rant about Utah leaving, they seemed more like they were trying to rile up the local fans than to present any sort of informed opinion.Originally posted by jay santos View PostHe was hired to sell newspapers to BYU fans.Last edited by ERCougar; 09-14-2010, 04:12 PM.At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah

I sent an email to the Norman, OK guy after his on-air dismissal of BYU last summer and his response was a profanity laced tirade about the age of BYU's players and some nonsense about their abilities. (You may recall his reference to Jan and others as guys on his softball league). Just think if in my email I had actually accused him of being a homer.Originally posted by ERCougar View PostExactly. The smaller the market, the more homerish the newspaper reporting. Just my opinion. The L.A. Times is brutal on all the local teams - no homers to be seen. Not so for local radio. UCLA and USC have their own station and it's a homer for them - just like KSL and KALL.Originally posted by ERCougar View PostExactly.
