Arguing with Shaka about Nelson is a lost cause, he knows a lot about football but he is not a neutral observer when it comes to the performance of Heaps and Nelson.
Dude, just like this week with Heaps Nelson did not have time. When Nelson tucked and ran last week Jake took a sack this week. The result was the same.
Nelson can throw better than you think. However he will never be able to demonstrate that to any degree if the O-line doesn't clean things up.
The funny thing is not arguing for Nelson. I'm arguing for honesty when games are evaluated. Junkie and I don't always agree but I respect his opinion because he can break down a game beyond the, "Nelson can't throw accurately for more than ten yards" thing.
You, Grace, and especially MPFunk really aren't doing Heaps any favors by continuing to go after Nelson.
Three plays today that tells me Heaps will be pretty dang good:
1. On the TD drive BYU is running their 2 minute office not once did Heaps look frazzled or hurried, the play that stood out was on a 2nd down he has 5 wide and you can see him start to his left and go through all of his progressions then throw a perfect check down to Hague out of the backfield for a 13 yard gain.
2. The TD Pass. His first read was Hoffman, Heaps looks at Cody and Cody is obviously not open so once again he goes through 4 reads you can see him scanning the field, finally he goes back to Hoffman and finds him with a dart in the back of the endzone.
3. The final play was actually an incomplete pass it was on the final drive of the game, Heaps rolls out to his right and throws on the run downfield to Chambers he actually fires the ball right passed two FSU defenders 40 yards downfield and hits Chambers right in the hands but just a bit to far out of bounds.
If he has more plays like this as opposed to the balls he was one hopping to receivers and the other errant throws he has all the potential in the world. (Side note: the ball thrown behind chambers as he was going over the middle was not on Heaps, FSU was in a zone and Chambers needed to sit down right where that ball was thrown instead he kept running across there was a linebacker right in front of him had Heaps lead him on that throw).
I actually thought BYUs defense played well at stretches today and horrible during stretches.
FSU ran for 278 yards, 120 of those came on 2 plays. They had 44 carries on the day. 42 carries for 158 yards is not bad, but obviously they need to eliminate those two big plays.
In the Passing game Ponder only threw for 149 yards, and 45 of those yards came on 1 play in which a 6'6 receiver just out jumped Brandon Bradley who had good coverage. Once again I think those are solid numbers but that one big play (which lead to a TD).
Eliminate those 3 big plays and the defense puts in a very solid performance statistically. Obviously they need to clean up the missed tackles as well.
When did Reynolds get hurt and how much time did he miss? I think having Reynolds out or playing injured really affected what Heaps could do. He made some nice throws but took several hits as well. Was today the first sack that Reynolds has given up?

That was an incredible throw - all arm and tons of zip.

Previously I think he had only given up 1 in over 500 passing attempts. That was according to Mel Kiper's best underclassmen list updated yesterday. He has Reynolds listed as the #1 LT.
I think our defense will be surprisingly adequate against Nevada.
I want a shutout, no more, no less. Then after Heaps throws his fourth TD of the game I want them to kick an on sides kick so he can throw a fifth. I want to hang 80 on those back stabbing bastards.

Knock it off. This board has enough problems without a dose of middle-age lechery.
Jordan Pendleton had 12 tackles today? Why do I only remember 2 or 3? I thought he was nowhere to be found today. Were they down field? I honestly don't remember seeing him on that many plays.

I agree. Heaps has all the upside in the world. I have nothing against Riley. I think he's a hell of a kid and at heart a footballer. He's just not a QB at this level. It really pisses me off that the coaches wasted so much of the summer when this could have been resolved. The timing could be so much better. The routes would be so much cleaner. The protection so much better. The playbook expanded. Etc. I honestly believe that Bronco was doing what he thought was best, but this team could be so much further along.

He made some really nice plays at the beginning of the game. I think I mentioned both of them earlier in this thread.

I think some are making a mistake that young players automatically improve a lot. Young players that play crappy don't always mature into great players, even if they have talent. I'm not quit as bullish as most of you. Not just for Heaps, but all the young players and the team in general.
