Having now embarked on this I think Bronco has no choice but to stick with it until one of them really distinguishes himself one way or the other. Otherwise he alienates one of them and sows discord in the team. As Surfah and I were saying during the game, if you win its brilliant. If you lose everyone will say it is the problem.

I'm not trying to bust anyone's hump but it was clear to me that Nelson was the difference maker of the two. I let out a sigh of relief when Nelson entered the game. He delivered what I think Bronco thought he would. The fact is, though, you just can't keep a talent like Heaps off the field. It is in many ways similar to the Leak / Tebow situation. Hopefully they can continue to balance it to such an extent that it pays even bigger dividends down the road. My gut tells me though, they will have to name one the starter and give him the lion-share of snaps.Originally posted by cougjunkie View PostYou can check every text message I sent during the game (and I sent a lot most of themt o posters on this board) I was singing Heaps praises that whole game, I was not more comfortable with either one, but I felt like Heaps was a big play waiting to happen while Nelson was more in the game to run clock and control field position. His TD to Quezada was a nice throw but it came on a short field after a roughing the kicker penalty. His TD to JJ was a blown coverage and actually very similar to the one that Wynn threw to Christopher in the Utah game. So I guess you are right according ot Utah Dan only an All-American QB makes that throw so Nelson is the better qb in his eyes.
I honestly wish they would play Heaps full time and bring Nelson in as a situational QB.
I think Bronco will wait one more game before making that decision—at least I hope he does.

If we do it as long as we win, we'll do it until we lose. I'd prefer to change before we lose, if at all possible.Originally posted by Surfah View PostFrom ESPN Rumors:
I hate the argument that we won as validation that it was the right thing given we don't know what would have happened had one started and received most of the reps over the other. Though I honestly feel that either Jake or Riley could have played the whole game and won. Because if we're being honest, although we don't know what kind of season Washington will have, that team is not very good. I'd be surprised if they're bowl eligible.τὸν ἥλιον ἀνατέλλοντα πλείονες ἢ δυόμενον προσκυνοῦσιν

It's hard not to buy into that kind of hype. Heaps was incredibly poised and he really has all the tools. He moves very well also. I do think there's a little gamesmanship going on here. An attempt to sow a little discord maybe?Originally posted by MarkGrace View Post

It's also consistent with Bronco's MO. Unless one of the QB's just absolutely tanks it, I expect to see this the entire season. Inasmuch as it affects his decision-making, Bronco doesn't care what the fans or media have to say on the matter. He seems to be stubborn like that. If it starts to affect team chemistry and we see some open discontent then he'll possibly make a change. But as of now he seems to have them all singing from the same hymnal.Originally posted by UtahDan View PostHaving now embarked on this I think Bronco has no choice but to stick with it until one of them really distinguishes himself one way or the other. I think that Heaps/Nelson chest bump speaks volumes. Odd as it is, there seems to be a part of them that really believes the team spirit stuff they're spouting off.Originally posted by YOhio View PostIt's also consistent with Bronco's MO. Here's what the Washington DC had to say:
http://www.ksl.com/index.php?nid=498&sid=12304693"I really didn't notice him out there, quite honestly. I know he's No. 9 and he's just another player out there to me. I didn't notice anything. I don't know if his stats are good. I didn't really pay attention to how well he played. He might have done good or bad, I didn't really pay attention to him. (No.) 13 (Riley Nelson) was more of a threat, in our opinion, because he could run."At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah

Nelson was definitely the more effective QB against Washington. Heaps will get there, and probably soon, but he isn't there yet.Originally posted by ERCougar View Post

I am with you. The day they hired the man who taunted KSU's bench in BYU's best bowl win, I became a Husky fan.Originally posted by beefytee View PostAs I walked into the stadium I had visions of FSU flashing before me. I was worried about this game.
The Husky players seems pretty pump. BYU looked lackadaisical. Even the refs broke their huddle and ran to their position with more intensity than the courgars.
The 3 and out and subsequent touchdown didn't ease any of my concerns.
The Washington touchdown pass was the turning point though. Sure Locker threw a touchdown pass, but he got nailed on the throw. I think that made a big difference going forward. The next series their offense stalled and the punting team game up the safety. From there it was a game.
On another note, I am now a huge husky fan. I may adopted them as my second team, much as BO adopted the Crimson Tide.
As I've mentioned before. Our seats are right in front of the corner of the visitors section. The husky fans right behind us were absolute studs. They had fun with my kids and were great to talk to. They shared their peanuts with my kids and were great to talk football with. We shook hands at the end of the game. They were a class act.
So I'm a huge Husky fan from here on out. Sorry HFNW. Just being honest.
Saying that, I am not convinced my favorite # 12 will be in Purple and Gold for much more than 3 more years. I was not impressed with what Washington put on the field with what they had returning.Do Your Damnedest In An Ostentatious Manner All The Time!

The only "play" I remember an ILB making was Aveni running down Locker. I noticed that UW's rush game was feast or famine - usually an indicator of blown assignments. I thought Aveni blew one on Polk's long run on that draw on 3rd down in the first quarter and I saw Ogletree miss one on the long one in the 4th. I also thought that our ILBs are not real great in pass coverage. Ogletree got close on one and was pissed afterwards so hopefully that is a sign he knows where he should be. However, the many long passes in the middle of the field indicate to me that BYU's biggest defensive weakness is ILB and free safety, especially against the pass. It takes more athleticism than Shane Hunter has to defend the pass at this level. I think Aveni is the best athlete of the bunch and he needs to start getting starter reps soon.Originally posted by cougjunkie View PostRegarding the game I told you guys our front 7 is legit. I love Sealver Siliga at utah he is my Utah man crush like David Reed last year, but Romney Fuga might be just as good. He was dominant today. Aveni Leung-Wai is the fastest middle backer we have had in a long time the way he ran down locker on that one play was unreal.
The secondary had a few blown assignments both of those long pass plays came on double moves one of them Brandon Bradley bit, the other Andrew Rich. Brian Logan continues to do nothing but break up passes and I actually thought Eason played well.
I do hate how BYU never goes nickel, they did at the very end of the first half after giving up the big play and getting UW in field goal range but other than that they stayed in base the whole game. We also blitzed more this game than we did all of last year.
I also thought Pendleton got torched on a couple of passes. His pass defense on longer passes leave me surprised he was once a safety, it reminds me of Brandon Howard being in the right place and covering the receiver than just watching the ball float into the receivers' hands.Do Your Damnedest In An Ostentatious Manner All The Time!

Chambers should have been moved to safety before last year. Hafoka never touched the field and that kid can play. BYU has enough receivers but is lacking depth at safety. That is one thing about Mendenhall I wish he would change, he lets the kids play where they want.Originally posted by Senioritis View PostThe BYU offensive line is one of the few constants in life. Big, girthy, angry group of men with little concern for the health of opponents. They absolutely blew UW up. I think they are the best unit out there, by a wide margin.
Jake Heaps can throw the freaking football. I have been hoping with all of my soul that he is the second coming of John Walsh. I think my hope has been in vain. Ugh.
Oneil Chambers is quickly becoming my favorite Cougar in history. Prone to fumbling, pissy attitude, legitimate anger issues, bunch of skill. I can only think of two reasons to flip someone off on the football field: (1) the opposing coach onside kicks it up 43-0, and (2) the opposing safety makes your basic, everyday tackle on your basic pass play in your basic game. I love Chambers. What a jackass.
Based on the performance last night, I can't see Cougar fans being anything but very confident about this team. I thought the whole game went about as well as could be expected for the BYU.

I think there are really lots of advantages to both players in this situation.Originally posted by All-American View PostI think that Heaps/Nelson chest bump speaks volumes. Odd as it is, there seems to be a part of them that really believes the team spirit stuff they're spouting off.
Heaps gets to ease into college football (less pressure on his shoulders) and Nelson gets to play which he probably wouldn't otherwise.
I think they both have reason to like this set up, at least right now.

yeah I felt that way on third and long as well. I did like that Nelson was in at the end to give us more options in the running game when we were running out the clock though. Honestly I was shocked at how well Riley performed yesterday, but it is clear that Heaps is the future. The question is how long it will take before he is the present. It is dam close now and I think by game coaches will not be able to keep him off the field.Originally posted by cougjunkie View PostYeah tooblue is full of shit. I was indifferent regarding which QB was in the game. But I will say this whenever we were in third and long I wished Heaps was on the field.
I can not think of a situation when I thought I wish Nelson was in right now.Dyslexics are teople poo...
