  • Easy with the hype there, Coach Calhoun.

The challenge is steep with or without Rembert. Air Force hasn’t beat BYU since 2003, and the Cougars have two capable quarterbacks. Calhoun praised both starter Riley Nelson and freshman Jake Heaps. Nelson started, but Calhoun saved his highest praise for Heaps.

“I think the one kid is a slam-dunk (NFL) first round pick,” Calhoun said. “He’s as slam dunk as it gets.”

BYU has had quarterbacks like Ty Detmer, Steve Young and Jim McMahon, but Calhoun said Heaps’ potential trumps them all.

“I think he’s more talented than any QB they’ve ever had there,” Calhoun said.

Yeah tooblue is full of shit. I was indifferent regarding which QB was in the game. But I will say this whenever we were in third and long I wished Heaps was on the field.

I can not think of a situation when I thought I wish Nelson was in right now.

The only one full of sh** is you. You know you let out a sigh of relief every time he took the field. They passed for the same amount of yardage and yet Nelson rushed for over 40 plus yards and lead the O to two touchdowns. The two QB system was the right call. Go Cougs!

One thing worth mentioning is that UW already seemed to blitz a lot more when he was in the game last night and he didn't seem too frazzled. O-line held their own, and Kariya was suprisingly adept at picking the blitzer. They seemed to bring more pressure at Heaps than Nelson (for obvious reasons) and I kept waiting for him to make a big mistake but it never came.

I felt pretty comfortable with both. Moreso than I thought I'd be. I'm all for the dual system at least for a few more games.

Agreed. It would be nice to see it become more situational than every other series though. But I can't think of a better way to bring along Heaps.

I was disappointed by the 2 QB system announcement. However just from a feel of the game perspective it seemed like the team moved better with Riley in the game. I'd be fine with him being named the guy going into this week.

You can check every text message I sent during the game (and I sent a lot most of themt o posters on this board) I was singing Heaps praises that whole game, I was not more comfortable with either one, but I felt like Heaps was a big play waiting to happen while Nelson was more in the game to run clock and control field position. His TD to Quezada was a nice throw but it came on a short field after a roughing the kicker penalty. His TD to JJ was a blown coverage and actually very similar to the one that Wynn threw to Christopher in the Utah game. So I guess you are right according ot Utah Dan only an All-American QB makes that throw so Nelson is the better qb in his eyes.

I honestly wish they would play Heaps full time and bring Nelson in as a situational QB.

Kariya did a very nice job picking up the blitz.

Knock it off. This board has enough problems without a dose of middle-age lechery.

                          • From ESPN Rumors:

We're still not convinced that the two-QB system will work long-term -- especially if coach Bronco Mendenhall continues to alternate the two every series, which he said he would likely do this week against Air Force -- but it paid dividends on Saturday as BYU beat Washington, with both Riley Nelson and Jake Heaps passing for exactly 131 yards.

Mendenhall was so strict with his rotation that following a roughing-the-punter call that allowed BYU to keep possession, he still switched from Heaps to Nelson.

Again, we'll see how long this lasts. We're not sure anyone has ever done anything as nutty as rotating QBs on every series (how many three-and-outs do you watch before you go with the hot hand?), but the fact that the team beat a Pac-10 opponent would only seem to validate the strategy.
I hate the argument that we won as validation that it was the right thing given we don't know what would have happened had one started and received most of the reps over the other. Though I honestly feel that either Jake or Riley could have played the whole game and won. Because if we're being honest, although we don't know what kind of season Washington will have, that team is not very good. I'd be surprised if they're bowl eligible.

I will say this. Part of what makes the two-QB system fail in most cases is guys not knowing how they'll play, worrying about if they make a mistake if they'll get yanked. Knowing that you're trading off, and this is your time to drive the team, and the next series, you're watching regardless of what happens I think takes a bit of the pressure of making a mistake off. You know where you stand, and can just go out and play.

I'm not sold on this system being a long term answer either, but I think for right now, it'll have to work.
