At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah

    • My thoughts on the Game.

As I walked into the stadium I had visions of FSU flashing before me. I was worried about this game.

The Husky players seems pretty pump. BYU looked lackadaisical. Even the refs broke their huddle and ran to their position with more intensity than the courgars.

The 3 and out and subsequent touchdown didn't ease any of my concerns.

The Washington touchdown pass was the turning point though. Sure Locker threw a touchdown pass, but he got nailed on the throw. I think that made a big difference going forward. The next series their offense stalled and the punting team game up the safety. From there it was a game.

On another note, I am now a huge husky fan. I may adopted them as my second team, much as BO adopted the Crimson Tide.

As I've mentioned before. Our seats are right in front of the corner of the visitors section. The husky fans right behind us were absolute studs. They had fun with my kids and were great to talk to. They shared their peanuts with my kids and were great to talk football with. We shook hands at the end of the game. They were a class act.

So I'm a huge Husky fan from here on out. Sorry HFNW. Just being honest.

At the UW game two years ago, we were right in the middle of a huge purple crowd. They were all super-cool, even after the crappy way it ended.

Tough to say who had the right read in a few of those cases, but seeing that type of performance from a true freshman with his arm, you've got to be salivating at his potential.
I think two of those were to Hoffman. True freshman QB, RS freshman WR -- lots of inexperience on each end of that play.

I saw that at least three or four times int he game, and it actually gives me a lot of hope. You've got inexperience all over the place but still a decent enough result. I don't have any illusions that Washington has any sort of world-beater defense or anything, but I'm very pleased with all aspects of the game, with the exception of Mitch Payne, who is probably the nicest guy I've ever hated.

EDIT: I also thought our long snaps seemed to be way slow. But I'm biased because last year's starter was a relative of a friend.

                  • Face it Heaps is a much better quarterback than Nelson. Nelson is a much better athlete than Heaps. They both have their strengths. With that being said I think Heaps has way more potential as a quarterback than Nelson has as an athlete. For example come Florida state I do not see Nelson being able to run with the same effectiveness. Also once teams start game planning for him I think he will struggle a bit more, it seemed like Washington did not practice one time for the option.

On the flip side I only see Heaps getting better and better. Eventually I think we see Heaps as the clear cut starter and Nelson playing situationally. Not that Nelson is not capable but I think Jake will be just that good.

Regarding the game I told you guys our front 7 is legit. I love Sealver Siliga at utah he is my Utah man crush like David Reed last year, but Romney Fuga might be just as good. He was dominant today. Aveni Leung-Wai is the fastest middle backer we have had in a long time the way he ran down locker on that one play was unreal.

The secondary had a few blown assignments both of those long pass plays came on double moves one of them Brandon Bradley bit, the other Andrew Rich. Brian Logan continues to do nothing but break up passes and I actually thought Eason played well.

I do hate how BYU never goes nickel, they did at the very end of the first half after giving up the big play and getting UW in field goal range but other than that they stayed in base the whole game. We also blitzed more this game than we did all of last year.

I noticed the blitzing - I was happy to see that. I also had the same thought when Leung-Wai ran down Locker - it was a great moment. And, to channel my inner Goatnapper, Brian Logan makes my nipples hard.

                      • The BYU offensive line is one of the few constants in life. Big, girthy, angry group of men with little concern for the health of opponents. They absolutely blew UW up. I think they are the best unit out there, by a wide margin.

Jake Heaps can throw the freaking football. I have been hoping with all of my soul that he is the second coming of John Walsh. I think my hope has been in vain. Ugh.

Oneil Chambers is quickly becoming my favorite Cougar in history. Prone to fumbling, pissy attitude, legitimate anger issues, bunch of skill. I can only think of two reasons to flip someone off on the football field: (1) the opposing coach onside kicks it up 43-0, and (2) the opposing safety makes your basic, everyday tackle on your basic pass play in your basic game. I love Chambers. What a jackass.

Based on the performance last night, I can't see Cougar fans being anything but very confident about this team. I thought the whole game went about as well as could be expected for the BYU.

                        What a pisser.

On that play I said aloud "Bad angle!" I am so used to slow LBs that I thought for sure Locker would get the corner on him. Blew me away. UtahDan even asked who that was and I had to break down Aveni's name hyphen and all.

I also agree with you about Heaps. Heaps showed unlimited potential yesterday. He's the future and no matter what Nelson gives you in athleticism, toughness, fanatical effort, or whatever other intangible you want to throw in him, he's never going to be the QB that Heaps will be. That is easily discernible. There is going to come a point, and it will come quickly where trading series like they did yesterday is going to retard Jake's growth and progress as the heir.

                            • Another note from watching the game on TV. I thought numerous times that I cannot wait until next season when ESPN or our own crew will be doing these games. What a shitty production. The cameramen got juked out a lot. But the worst part was they missed the 2 point conversion completely. They come back from break and they're showing the replay.

                                My observations:

The offensive and defensive lines were fantastic—BYU dominated the trenches on both sides of the ball.

The linebackers are suspect IMO and I think it's mostly due to inexperience. Unfortunately AFA is next up followed by FSU. Too bad we couldn't have a patsy schedule like Utah to allow for a little seasoning.

The defensive secondary was as good a group as I have seen, especially on the corners. Logan was fantastic.

It seemed to me BYU blitzed more last night than the last two seasons combined. I agree that they needed to get out of the base D a little more but maybe that will happen against better talent at FSU?

The RB's by committee are serviceable. We have been spoiled the last couple of seasons with Unga and Tonga etc. Welcome back to reality.

The tight ends were a nice surprise. I really liked how they were used in the offense and I look forward to watching their progression this season.

And as for the signal callers ... Heaps is clearly the more talented QB. Wow is all I can say; his poise and abilities are as advertised. However, BYU does not win that game last night with him as the lone starter. The bottom line is BYU get's 9 wins with Nelson alone this season. With Heaps alone they get 7. Combined you might be looking at 10 plus. Playing them both is a gamble but the team and each athlete seems to be handling it the right way. That's why Bronco is the head coach and Anae or Doman are not.
