Agree 100%. I find the complaints that Heaps throws the ball too hard a little absurd. I can't remember a QB that throws a better ball and that goes back to Detmer.Originally posted by BlueHair View PostI'm going to respectfully disagree with the comments that Heaps needs to throw with less velocity. The receivers need to learn to catch. There were at least 5 drops. If the pass is 10 yards or more, I say throw it as hard as you can if there is a defender nearby. Defensive players have a hard time intercepting hard throws. BYU has JUGGS machines. Turn them up and practice catching.

Detmer's an odd stopping point. Detmer threw plenty of wounded ducks. At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah

I think Ashworth is the one who owes him breakfast. I think I remember two drops where he got both hands on the ball.Originally posted by MarkGrace View PostBut damn I wish our receivers would come up with more of his throws. I already said that he could benefit from taking a little off it in certain situations, but I saw high schoolers catching these same balls a year ago. Some of those drops yesterday were just pathetic. And I hope Jacobsen is buying him breakfast this morning. Just absolutely blew a block that would have put JJ in for 6 on Heaps second drive, and flat out blew a drive for Jake in the 4th that looked like it was headed for points when he had a third down pass go right through his hands. At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah

MJ had a surprisingly mediocre game. He and Ashworth need to step it up.Originally posted by MarkGrace View PostAnd I hope Jacobsen is buying him breakfast this morning. The drop near the end of the third quarter killed me. It had zip but should have been caught by a receiver as seasoned as Jacobsen. The next throw to Ashworth was thrown behind. If it had been on target it should have also been caught.Originally posted by YOhio View PostMJ had a surprisingly mediocre game. He and Ashworth need to step it up.

The drop at the end of the third was a crappy throw. The velocity and the fact that it was thrown behind made for an extremely difficult catch. Very few receivers will come up with that ball.Originally posted by ERCougar View PostI think Ashworth is the one who owes him breakfast. Wrong. The guy sitting right behind me said that there is no excuse for not catching a ball that touches a hand. It also seemed like there were quite a few times (and I believe Bronco said as much in the post game) when Heaps/the receivers weren't on the same page on option routes. Heaps put the ball where he thought it should be, but the receiver stopped/kept going. Tough to say who had the right read in a few of those cases, but seeing that type of performance from a true freshman with his arm, you've got to be salivating at his potential.

I know the throw was behind him, but he got two hands on it, and in my book, if you're getting your college education paid for, you catch anything you get both hands on--and a few that you don't. That's the standard. You're allowed a mistake, but it's still a mistake.

Ashworth's other drop was a tough one too--over his shoulder and trying to stay inbounds. Doesn't mean a D1 receiver shouldn't be expected to pull that in.Originally posted by Shaka View PostSorry had to edit my post. I will say this on the two QB system. I like Nelson being able to play all out and take advantage of his strength and really run the ball. I don't have that fear that if he gets knocked around and has to take some time out of the game that BYU is hosed. I really liked the way he ran determined over the FS in the second quarter and his drive on the two point conversion. That type of determination makes me wonder if he wouldn't be the starter at RB if that were the position he wanted to play.
