  • Jay Hill would be super smart to go to Michigan and then take over for whit when he retires. I hope he stays though.

That assumes KW is wildly successful. He may be but he could also crash and burn. If he does crash and burn that sets back Hill on the path to a P4 HC job he wants. Granted I have blue goggles but the more certain move if Hill wants to get to a P4 HC job he would want sooner is to stay at BYU. But yes the upside of going to michigan is huge if he wants to chase it.

      • As much as it would suck to lose Jay Hill, Morgan Scalley is absolutely going to get it the worst at the end of all this.

        • I'm going to be honest here, this is a good hire for Michigan. Utah was exceptionally lucky to have KW as long as they did.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

          • This feels like a “Consolation Prize” for Michigan and a lottery pick for KW..

But, this comment is a bit much.

Hey come on. Has to be a huge upgrade over the last clown they had.

              • Another outlandish quote from this article. Who wrote this?? Dave Portnoy??

“Retaining QB1 in Ann Arbor, regardless of who the next head coach is, gives the Wolverines the best chance to compete for conference and national championships in 2026.”

Anyone would’ve been an upgrade. But KW has no idea what a Big 10 schedule is like. It is punishing. And everyone will be gunning for them. Kick them while they are down.

This feels like a Rich Rod kinda hire. He was amazing at WV. Then got pounded at Michigan.

                  • It’s gonna feel weird cheering for Kyle Whittingham when they play Ohio State. But alas, here we are.

                    • I’ll say what nobody else is saying: Whittingham is overrated as a football coach. Dude’s had a horseshoe up his arse for basically his entire head coaching gig. In 2005, his first year as a head coach, he was handed a well-oiled machine of a program,l and ended up being an OT result vs BYU away from a losing record and missing a bowl game and probably coming back on an extremely hot seat in 2006. But he got to play Bronco “the rivalry is just another game” Mendenhall and salvage a bowl game and, ultimately, his career at Utah.

The entire 2008 season—which allegedly propelled Utah into the P12–was basically Whittingham’s Utah shitting the bed against good competition, salvaged by Louie Sakoda making every kick imaginable while kickers for TCU, OSU, and other good teams missing key FG after key FG. But good job having a solid kicker, I guess?

Whittingham’s HC tenure at Utah was prolonged by Bronco’s laissez-faire approach to the rivalry. Whittingham finally ran out of luck in 2023; it’s no coincidence that he was forced out after losing 3x in a row to BYU.

Stumbling bass-ackwards into the weakest of the P5 conferences in 2011 was yet another extremely fortuitous development. He now had a huge recruiting advantage over Utah’s rival. Basically all Utah had to do was have a pulse every season and they were automatically in contention for a trip to the P12 championship and a direct line to a BCS game.

Do not interpret this as me saying he is a bad coach. He is not a bad coach. He is a good coach. Well above average, even. But he is not nearly as great as his reputation and record would lead the casual football observer to believe.

Nevertheless, outside of Indiana’s coach, the B10 is also pretty weak in the coaching department. (Sorry Brock, Ryan Day is mid AF and benefits greatly from OSU’s inherent advantages). So Whittingham won’t have to be great very often. I predict a lot of 9-3 seasons and an underwhelming overall tenure in Ann Arbor. Maybe Whittingham lucks into a playoff game, but if so, he’ll lose to a team he should beat.

                        • Haha. Whittingham was just lucky? For the last two years it has been non stop whining from Ute fans that BYU is the luckiest team in America. Both fanbases are alike I guess.

The fact of the matter is that sports hinge a ton on randomness and luck. You can’t turn a crap program into a good program on luck, but the difference between a team going 12-0 and that same team going 10-2 is probably a coin toss on a few plays. Whittingham had a ton of those coin flips go his way for a long, long time.

Looks like Michigan is going to have a former Cougar head coach and offensive coordinator. On top of that a former BYU coach as DC.

I guess I found my new second favorite team!

Also, it sure will be interesting how Whittingham handles such difficult competition as Purdue, Rutgers, Maryland, and UCLA! I’m sure at a place like Michigan, recruiting is super tough!
