You could also say that BYU is only returning 1 starter from the front 7 on defense. I know Manu started as a true freshman in '07 and Fuga saw a lot of action last year as well. There isn't a lot of experience other than these 3 guys on BYU's front 7. To stop Air Force the front 7 has to play with a ton of discipline. It is still to be determined if these guys can do that."Take it to the Bank"

Very good point. Heaps needs reps and he needs as many as possible.Originally posted by BGRTHNUMEGO View PostAgreed. And one of the reasons splitting time hurts is because it means splitting practice time for as long as it goes on. And in this case, that will be even more detrimental because BYU is going to be practicing two very unique offensive schemes with Nelson and Heaps.
If the coaches feel that at some point this season Heaps is going to be their guy, then get him as many reps as possible, in game and in practice. Give Nelson a few sets that he'll get to utilize each game, but that way you limit the variation in practice.
Also switching these two in and out will completely throw off the O. Two completely different styles. The game plan changes depending on who is behind center. Will the O be able to adjust to that? The line has experience and maybe they will be able to do this. The other skill positions don't have that experience the O line does."Take it to the Bank"

It's been feast or famine for Utah against the run vs. AFA for a decade. This year, we should feast, but I still wouldn't want to play AFA on 9/11, at its place, coming off an FCS game where it can probably hide a lot of stuff it would normally run against conference opposition.Originally posted by Hot Lunch View PostYou could also say that BYU is only returning 1 starter from the front 7 on defense. This very easily could've been Utah's date to play AFA, and I'm delighted it's later, even if it comes during our most daunting season-ending Bataan Death March schedule ever.

I don't see this angle. If anything, it's a ruse to let Riley save face, keep the "culture" of the program alive, and prevent Heaps from some type of entitlement.Originally posted by wally View PostIf this is true, does this mean that the ruse is to keep Heaps from transfering?
Everything we know about BYU and Bronco suggests that if the job were truly just Riley's right now, they would give it to Riley. But clearly that's not the case, and I don't think it bodes well for Riley's future that he couldn't clearly beat out a kid four years his junior at the very beginning of his college learning curve.
My guess is we see something close to a split through the first four, and then when the schedule gets soft we start transitioning to Heaps and using Nelson as a purely situational guy to supplement our (possibly) weak running attack. So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

One clear disadvantage that this situation creates for Heaps is that the lack of rhythm within the offense with rotating QBs is going to be more easily overcome by Nelson. He's going to have fewer reads to make, his personal rhythm will develop more quickly because of his designed runs, and his passing limitations mean he'll be doing a lot of check downs and drop offs anyway.
But my hope is that Heaps looks the situation as a challenge, and that if he really is a special player in waiting that he steps up and proves he is the superior option. He's certainly not in the ideal situation to make that happen, but the visibility of games gives him an ideal platform to take the job if he shows he deserves it.

Obviously we are really concerned with Heaps transferring. I mean, if he can't even beat out Riley Nelson for the starting job I'm sure a ton of other programs would pick him up right away and let him start over thier QBs.Originally posted by wally View PostIf this is true, does this mean that the ruse is to keep Heaps from transfering?

We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. Lets not forget that one is a lefty and one is a righty, as well.

Back in the day when Steve Young and Joe Montana were trading time as the 49ers QB some of the receivers (I'm looking at you, Jerry Rice) complained about the opposite ball rotation on passes and how difficult it was to go from one to the other.Originally posted by Coach McGuirk View PostLets not forget that one is a lefty and one is a righty, as well.PLesa excuse the tpyos.
