byu does have 4 straight 10 win seasons. Seems BM is doing something right.

I can. But I don't see how starting the lesser guy for 1 game much helps build that winning culture. Or playing 2 quarterbacks for any significant duration.

            (2) Bronco thinks they annointed Heaps without considering how important the "culture" is that he has established.

            (3) Bronco is rewarding Nelson for coming to BYU and being a backup by letting him start the season opener.

            (4) Nelson will not start again at BYU after the opener unless Heaps is injured.

            (5) Bronco expects Nelson will hit the field and be a star because it is a game situation; Anae and Doman think Heaps will hit the field and be a star.

I'm going with Anae and Doman. I think Doman's tendency would be to give Nelson more love because he sees himself in the kid. Despite that, Nelson never could separate himself from Heaps. Heaps will make mistakes but I don't think Nelson can get the job done.
            Assuming this is true:

I would worry as a BYU fan. This would appear to indicate that the "Bronco Show" is just beginning. I worry when a head coach micromanages like this. Especially as a defensive-minded head coach in an offensive-minded system, he needs to trust his coordinators.

Maybe I'm parsing words, but I don't think Bronco's talking about a winning culture, but rather a culture of effort, loyalty and dedication. Yes, he wants this culture to result in wins, but wins are simply a happy and necessary byproduct of the process. Playing the dude who's been there day in and day out for years, not months, definitely strengthens the culture of effort, loyalty and dedication.

Why are you worried? If what you say is true, you should be stoked.

Regardless of your level of hand-wringing, Bronco's been at the helm for a substantial period of time already. If he were a first or second year coach, I might agree with your concern that he's a micromanager. But the last 4 years (probably not his first year) indicate that its not a big concern.

How shocking. I've never, ever, had a boss who overruled my judgment.

News to every one. That is what superiors do. A good boss should generally hire a solid, competent person and then let them go to work, being a resource to help them. But they also need to help align the work of all their reports to maximize the efficiency of the system, and that will occasionally require them to nudge people in a different direction, or may even require a simple "no, this is what you/we will do" from time to time. It should be rare, but it DOES happen.

Is it a mistake for Bronco to have done so in this case? I tend to be in the camp to trust Anae and Doman (those directly responsible), partially because two-QB systems are generally not successful. But Bronco has proven to be a pretty darn good head coach so far, so I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt for now...

I believe they split reps in most games. McMahon was the "scrambler", Wilson the "drop-back passer". McMahon was named the starter, Wilson was the team captain. Early on, they sometimes alternated series, but as the season went on, it was more based on performance - so if one of them had a couple of unproductive series, the other would go in. Wilson threw for about 1500 yds and 8 TDs, McMahon for about 1300 yds and 8 TDs (on significantly fewer attempts). McMahon was named 1st team all conference.

The team went 9-3 and lost to Navy in their bowl game.

And yes, Lavell said he would never do it again. The next year, McMahon redshirted while Wilson led the team to an undefeated 11-0 mark, and then lost to Lee Corso's Indiana team 38-37 in the first-ever Holiday Bowl.

The following year, 1980, McMahon was a junior and the starter. They lost their first game to New Mexico, then went undefeated the rest of the way, including their first-ever bowl victory - the "Miracle" Bowl.

Some of us can still remember those days. The "Miracle" Bowl was my senior year in high school...
