For Ute fans who want to get used to their new conference, here's a good Stewart Mandel column about the 2010 season:

    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/201...ml?eref=sircrc

    I like Mandel.

NOTE: One of his key non-conference games is Oregon State vs. TCU on Sept. 4 at Cowboys Stadium. Tough openeer for OSU. A convincing win by TCU will start them on their way. I admire and respect that program.

      Mildly interesting UCLA tidbit:
Talented tackle Xavier Su'a-filo opted to go on a two-year Mormon mission after starting as a true freshman.
      Good for him.

        This NPR story is interesting:

To Start A Spinoff Biz, Look To Utah

When it comes to creating new start-ups from academic research, only MIT compares to the University of Utah — despite the fact that MIT's research budget is five times larger. Now officials from colleges around the country are flocking to Salt Lake City to learn how the school turns inventions into jobs, and profits.
I had no idea that the Fentanyl lollipop was invented at the U. That's a major part of pain care everywhere now.

Silly as it may sound, they are a real boon to cancer patients.

EDIT: This topic continues in a different thread. Sorry about that.

This is of some interest because UCLA's QB, Kevin Prince, is LDS and plans to serve a mission after he finishes playing for the Bruins. Utah will have 2 seasons against him because he is only a sophomore this year.

              http://espn.go.com/blog/pac10/post/_...ready-for-ucla

I know Kevin's mom and dad and they are good people. His uncle is Greg Prince, who wrote the David O. McKay bio.

Im sure Young would let everyone know that Gardner was the guy who recruited Fleischman and Pons.

Gardner could make an accusation that Young is a direct descendant of Brigham Young's 14th wife. And we all know what the PAC thinks of Brigham Young.

The latest rumors on the division alignment.

California and Arizona schools in the South division, everyone else in North, with TV concessions to keep the northwest schools happy.

Fleishman and Pons have been air-brushed from all Utah written materials. I don't know why you keep bringing them up. They were never at the U. of U.

I am viewing this from a totally selfish perspective: I want Utah playing in L.A. as much as possible!

It doesnt surp[rise me. Given the absolute revulsion that all the Cal people had to the possibility of not paying USC/UCLA every year it was clear they were going to press very hard to put all the newcomers in the other dicision. OTOH, I thought Colorado's deal had them playing USC or in a divisdion with USC or some such?

A popular way Ute fans show their support is by “putting up a U.” The sign is made by raising both hands above your head, turning the palms outward, pointing both index fingers toward the sky, and joining both thumbs together to form the shape of a U. This sign has been around for many years, but it gained in popularity shortly after the 2005 Fiesta Bowl. By the time the Utes faced Alabama in the 2009 Sugar Bowl, it had become a recognizable tradition among the Ute fans and players.

SIDE NOTE: Shortly after the Sugar Bowl, Alabama players started to copy this move, except they pointed their index fingers together to form an “A” shape – rather than a “U.” This copycat sign has now become popular among the Alabama culture too – but it all started with the Utes. )
