He's right about qualifying for the NCAA championships, that is an individual thing. I think he underestimates the importance of a good conference to a swimming recruit though. Right now a BYU swimmer knows he will compete against several good MWC teams (UNLV, Utah, TCU) and get a couple of meets with PAC-10 teams as well as a few invitationals. At the beginning of the season you get a couple of tune-up type meets with Seattle U etc... A few individuals will have NCAA championship cuts at the end of the year and will represent BYU at that meet.

Under this guy's scenario a swimmer would have to be satisfied with Seattle U., Loyola Marymount etc... all season long. I have my doubts that this would be satifsying to top tier recruits. Take Hawaii for instance. The WAC has no men's swimming but Hawaii has a good team. You'd think if the Pacific Coast Conference was an equal option Hawaii's team would compete there. Instead they compete in C-USA. Yes, BYU could still field a team under the scenario he gives, but I think it would be a team that steadily declined in quality.

Seriously. If BYU is indeed staying, I would hope they are only staying because they have been released from the television contract. I can't imagine that comcast signed off on that. And if they haven't received concessions, I can't see BYU sticking around. So in short, I think everyone is full of shit.
