I think you are right about that. But I also think that Utah's PAC-10 invitation made BYU fans very keen on BYU's doing something. On that I think we can agree. As for BYU's administration and BOT, I'd call them anything but impetuous or ego-driven. That said, it would be equally wrong to conclude, as SU's chum implied, that BYU's recent moves commenced only after, and were solely in response to, Utah's PAC-10 invitation.

After you've been here a while you will appreciate the multiple levels of deep symbolic meaning in the banter between YOhio and me. I suggest you become a student of our posts. No doubt, and that's why I'm grateful neither the school nor the athletics program is run by Cougarboard committee. That said, I do wish President Young would turn the Ute program over to the likes of jhill, rather than drhill, and a panel of like-minded Utefans.Originally posted by LA Ute View PostI think you are right about that. If I'm reading statman correctly, statman is saying that BYU can make more money as an Independent as opposed to remaining in the Mountain West Conference. Is that the point statman has been trying to make?Originally posted by statman View PostWhat is it about a $#itload of money that you don't understand?
Absolute worst case scenario - BYU multiplies it's revenue from broadcasting by 7 or 8 over the next five years or so, realizes it can't schedule well enough to ever have a reasonable chance at respect, and ends up either going back to whatever mediocre mid-major conference exists at the time, or dropping football altogether.
But if it does nothing over the next five years, and stays in the 'new and improved' MWC, it's in the same boat. The MWC has absolutely no future.
A more likely scenario - the new partnership with ESPN pays-off in spades. Recruiting ticks-up because of five or six prime-time appearances on ESPN each year. Money is better than could have been imagined in the MWC, and ensures that BYU can buy a schedule that guarantees an annual bowl appearance (hello Holiday Bowl!) and that's difficult enough to garner national attention - conference or no conference.
Best case scenario - BYU show's it can bring some things to the table and gets a Big 12 invite before ever playing a down as an Independent...

So is there a deadline for BYU to slink back to the MWC?When a true genius appears, you can know him by this sign: that all the dunces are in a confederacy against him.

I'm guessing he's not. What's funny about all this is that BYU has yet to announce or do anything, officially. It is still in the MWC. It has lots of travel brochures out, has its passport current, and could take off at a moment's notice, but it hasn't gone anywhere yet. One can't slink back to one's Barcalounger if one hasn't left it.Originally posted by SeattleUte View PostSo is there a deadline for BYU to slink back to the MWC?

I promise you that if BYU returns to the MWC I will do a post saluting BYU for having the courage to admit the error of its ways and do the right thing.Originally posted by RedSox View PostAre you preparing your "rip on BYU for going back to the MWC" post? When a true genius appears, you can know him by this sign: that all the dunces are in a confederacy against him.
