Patterson on BYU going Independent:

"If you're BYU, you better be careful what you wish for," Patterson said. "It's not my job to worry about what Utah does, what BYU does, but I can tell you this: If you think being an independent is an easier way to get to a national championship, you're kidding yourself."

The WAC is dead -- no way can BYU go to the WAC for basketball and other non-football sports at this point.

Something a little more nefarious may be in play here. I'm not sure the invites were to keep BYU away from the WAC, but to kill it outright and leave BYU with no place to go. Because right now, the WAC will officially cease to exist after this athletic year because it will have only six members.

The big question that needs to be answered is how badly does the MWC want BYU right now? How badly does BYU want the MWC?

Right. No way can BYU go to a dead/dying conference like the WAC. I think BYU's only option for non-football sports if they go independent now is the WCC.
