MWC might want to consider BYU's offer...

More rumblings about ESPN's Best of MWC/WAC conference down in Texas:

making the "Best of" conference a conference that could qualify for BCS status. Interesting development.
Then, BYU, TCU, Boise State, Fresno State, Nevada-Reno, Air Force, UNLV, and SDSU would create the “Best of” conference.
Under this scenario, ESPN would help pay Fresno State’s and Nevada-Reno’s $5 buy-out to WAC.

I love this idea. Please make it happen. Sorry landpoke.

What about New Mexico? I like having them around for basketball, more than SDSU.

With Boise State, TCU, BYU at the top, Fresno State, Air Force, Nevada in the middle and two bottom dwellers in UNLV and SDSU, does this get the new conference AQ status? It seems like it could make a compelling argument. The problem for the MWC that would always prevent it from obtaining AQ status was the fact that it had five uber-shitty teams. Now this conference would only have two.

Shed the Zapruder Network and possibly gain BCS AQ status, not bad.

Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

It would be a face-saving move...

A mere rumor gets out that we might move, everyone panics, conferences realign, and we come back to a sweeter deal. All without a single public comment.

        That's kinda ballsy.

Part of that agreement is that we don't pay a penny of the weasels' exit penalties though.

That would be sweet. They could call it the "Best of the West". They'd have to fight over the name because a shopping center near my house already has it, but I think they could wrestle it free.

Or we just drop Fresno and UNR, save the money, and combine with 6 from CUSA, for two divisions.

I'm all about screwing Fresno and Nevada right now. Plus, I like the East-West division thing.

Houston and UTEP are possibilities also if there are glitches with any of the "Best Of" teams.
Yeah, NM would be good for BB.

All these tweets and rumors which may have some basis in reality show just why it is foolhardy for most of us (except statman, of course, who is never wrong) to get too excited about what is going on. None of these moves happen in a matter of a day or two. All of this stuff is discussed and analyzed extensively behind closed doors long before it is leaked or announced. So what we see now about UNR and FSU and USU and the possible super conference aren't things springing out of whole cloth. They have been around as ideas and possibilities for weeks or months behind the scenes among the decision makers. (If you think that Hair Thompson stumbled on the idea to invite UNR and FSU to the MWC purely as a reaction to the rumor of BYU going independent you are kidding yourself.) This is why while i am intrigued by the discussion, I am not putting too much store in the situation until it all shakes out.
                PLesa excuse the tpyos.

Maybe it was all part of the plan...

Anyway, taking off my conspiracy hat I would bury the hatchet with Fresno and Nevada and look at the huge positives: possible BCS AQ status (didn't have it before) and getting away from the Mountain. This would be a big upgrade for BYU, I would be happy.

Yeah, I like it too. But my new Fresno/Nevada hatred aside, there's absolutely nothing about either of those schools that gets me excited at all. UTEP/Houston is even more interesting to me.

But the question is do they get you MORE excited than CSU, Wyo, and whoever else is in our awesome conference.

The #1 goal would be to form a conference that would have a shot at AQ BCS status. And an eight team conference like they listed would make a significantly more compelling case then the conference that currently exists. UNLV, Wyoming, SDSU, New Mexico and CSU are literally Sunbelt Conference quality teams right now and there's not effing way the BCS was ever going to allow in a conference with so many shitty teams (a majority in fact).

You change five shitty teams to two shitty teams and now the new conference would have a legitimate claim. Boise State and TCU have some kick ass rankings over the past few years and BYU's isn't too shabby either.

I'm not sure what the merits would be between SDSU and UNM. I really don't think it would be in the best interests of the new conference to add both.
